You see, this was a project that was written by a special education teacher that passed away shortly before the school year started. I was surprised when I saw that *I* was getting magna-tiles, because I didn't make this project. Then I realized that Heather did, when I looked back at the project, and realized that it was actually fully funded last summer. Her projects were put under my name last fall so that I could help get them where they needed to go. So seeing this helped me remember Heather and the good things she was doing for her students to see them grow. I will be making sure that these get down to the lower elementary special education classroom, and be assured, I KNOW the kiddos down there will love building barns, castles, race tracks, and using the people to practice life skills while having fun. It served the purpose, but now he is excited to play. I have a MS student who is looking at the bass clarinet, too. I've already put it to use by binding my judges' copies of the conductor scores for large group festival next month. Several years ago, we networked to create a list of which books should be read which years, and tried to coordinate it with the new ELA (English Language Arts) curriculum we just got. However, while we often had enough for small groups of 3-5, we didn't have classroom sets of several of these novels. Your gift allowed me to get a classroom set of \"The Boy in the Striped Pajamas\", a story about a young boy whose father gets assigned to run the Auschwitz camp. It will allow us to have a great many thought-provoking conversations as we read through this novel. \r\n\r\nI'm also excited to share the other texts for small group use afterwards, to expand their knowledge and critical thinking skills. While the books are all centered around this time period, they deal with other facets of WWII life (the girls who were assigned to cracking the Enigma code, an American family on board a ship that was torpedoed, a young person who made the choice to sabotage the bombs she was assigned to make for the Nazi's and more) as well as books written at all different reading levels (including a couple of the \"I Survived\" books turned into graphic novels---think comic books). Through these books students are learning about past events that have happened in our past with a fictional twist. We explore themes of overcoming hardships, good vs evil, understanding your identity, and how you fit in the world around you. \r\n\r\n\r\nWe spend time reading the book aloud, reading in groups, and going back through to find textual evidence. We focus a lot on using the resources we have to support the ideas that we are talking about. Students are asked to use critical thinking along with having evidence to back up their thoughts. We often ask questions like, \"how do you know that?\" \"what part of the story helps support your idea?\" \"how do you think they felt during that situation?\" \r\n\r\n\r\nIt is important for students to have quality books to be able to go back and reference as we are working throughout the class period. We are very grateful for the new books to use during these lessons. Here are some of the things students said when they found out we received new books:\r\n\r\n\r\n\"Having new books that aren't falling apart means having something that feels fresh and ready to use. When a book is new, the pages aren't ripped, the cover isn't bent, and nothing is missing. That makes it easier to read and learn without worrying about pages coming loose. New books can also make someone feel proud and excited. It feels good to open a clean book and know you'll be the first one to use it.\"\r\n\r\n\"To me, books that are new and not falling apart mean great things. It means I can read new materials and gain new knowledge of the past and present as well as a sweet story of fiction here and there. It means that I can hold the book without fear of pages falling and the cover breaking. I think all people should be able to have the materials to read into a new world or learn stuff about our world. Thank you for donating new books to us and I hope others can appreciate this gift that you have enabled us to have.\"\r\n\r\n\"What this means to me is that I can actually hold the book without the cover falling off. And it's nice to have a readable book. Thank you Donors Choose!!!!\"\r\n\r\n\"Having actual books to me means that I don't have to use the chromebook which I really don't enjoy very much too be on. Along with that I really enjoy reading and I will only read books that are a physical copy so that means I could also enjoy it more. I really appreciate you for donating these books to our school because we also are not the richest school and new books are not the most important so I really truly thank you!\"\r\n\r\n\r\n\"Sometimes my book was missing a page or pages would keep falling out, this was very annoying. Thank you for eliminating this annoyance, by donating brand new books to us.\" \r\n\r\nThank you for adding to our classroom and making learning easier and more accessible to all students.","fullyFundedDate":1765302805889,"projectUrl":"project/update-classroom-book-sets/9909809/","projectTitle":"Update Classroom Book Sets","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Miner","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-4_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10357487"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_38122","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":363,"numTeachers":7,"percentFrplEligible":46,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":94,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":1,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"51.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_REMOTE"},"inStateSupporters":62.7,"schoolId":38122,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Prentice Middle School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Prentice Middle School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/wisconsin/prentice-school-district/prentice-middle-school/38122"}
