My students often do not have enough time for open-ended play during the school day, and the STEM materials arrived at the perfect time. After weeks of end-of-year testing, they needed a creative and playful outlet to explore, collaborate, and simply enjoy learning.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite memories was playing Brainometry with a group of first graders. We began with each student working independently to complete their own challenge card. As they searched for the pieces they needed, I watched them naturally begin to share materials, ask one another for help, and problem-solve together. As the challenges became more difficult, students started partnering up to complete the builds. It was wonderful to see them practice important life skills such as teamwork, communication, perseverance, and taking turns. \r\n\r\nDuring a busy testing season, these STEM activities allowed us to slow down and enjoy meaningful moments together. As a teacher, I am constantly planning, teaching, and assessing. This project gave me the chance to simply play alongside my students, listen to their ideas, and watch their creativity shine. Those moments of connection are some of the most rewarding parts of teaching.\r\n\r\nI look forward to creating even more opportunities next school year for students to explore, collaborate, and learn through our STEM bins.\r\n\r\nThank you again for your generous donation to my classroom and for supporting public education.","fullyFundedDate":1779379463644,"projectUrl":"project/stem-tastic-bins-building-managing-mi/10189328/","projectTitle":"STEM-tastic Bins: Building & Managing Minds!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Nadia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8224553_orig.jpg?crop=710,710,x0,y293&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1665861394395","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8224553"},{"teacherId":8224553,"projectId":10180590,"letterContent":"Thank you for donating to \"Classroom Essentials for Kindergarten & First Grade Teachers.\" Your generosity allowed me to spread joy and appreciation to my team of teachers. \r\n\r\nI truly enjoy supporting and celebrating my colleagues, so putting together gift bags filled with student snacks, stickers, and tissues for our Kindergarten and First Grade teachers was especially meaningful and fun for me.\r\n\r\nI am incredibly grateful for your generosity and for your support of Plummer Elementary and DC Public Schools. With my TPT gift card, I purchased her complete writing bundle, which includes wonderful resources for early mark-making and emergent writing. I especially appreciated having a strong mentor text to serve as the foundation for my lessons, along with a thoughtful scope and sequence that connects colors with early scribbling and line-making. These materials have supported my instruction throughout the school year. I am looking forward to sharing these resources with my Pre-K colleagues during a professional development session later this spring as we begin planning for next year.\r\n\r\nThe TPT gift cards also allowed me to purchase additional decodable texts for my students. One of our favorites is the CVC comic strips. My students also love the \"read and draw\" stories, which do not include pictures and instead guide students through drawing steps to illustrate the pages they read. I secretly love these texts because they provide another way for me to assess students' decoding skills without relying on picture cues.\r\n\r\nThe playdough and sand trays have also been a huge hit with my students. During the long winter months when indoor recess was common, my first graders enjoyed many opportunities for creative play with playdough. My Pre-K students recently used playdough with mini bricks as part of their building study. Playdough is such a fun and effective way to sneak in fine motor practice for early learners. I am also very thankful for the large sand trays, which provide another engaging way for students to practice forming letters and writing words.\r\n\r\nThank you again for providing resources that help make writing engaging and accessible for my young writers. Students connect written music directly to the correct color and pitch, which makes learning much more concrete. Even my quieter students have gained confidence because every note matters and every student plays an important role.\r\nNext, students will begin composing their own short melodies in small groups.
