You are helping me give the gift of literacy and comprehension to a new group of students. I read a chapter from Ready Freddy book series almost every day. The kids request it if I forget! Through the read aloud, I ask them comprehension questions so they learn about characters, setting, inferences, and making predictions. I also build a community that loves reading and learning. \r\n\r\nI am now able to give each student 2 of their own books to read as they develop their phonics skills and become independent readers in first grade. I'll wrap them up and give them as gifts at Christmas and again at Valentine's Day. The cheering and joy over a book is amazing. I will then let them find a cozy spot to read and encourage them to take the book home and read with their family. For some students, this is often the first chapter book that they own. \r\n\r\nIn the past few weeks, I have had former students stop by my room and ask if I still read Ready Freddy to my class or tell me that they still have the books I gave them and they still read them! I even had a student who is now in second grade sit in the \"teacher chair\" and read a chapter to my class so my current students can hear how fluently they will be able to read if they work hard this year.
