Students in my class have worked on creating their own stained glass windows, inspired by the Notre Dame's reopening last year. Students used a combination of sharpies, acrylic paint, and wax paper to trace and paint their designs. As a core department, we also held a celebration and gallery walk where students were able to visit each core classroom and see stained glass pieces their peers created. During the gallery walk students used star stickers to vote on their favorite projects. Winners had their art work displayed and hung up. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, students used the acrylic paint for the Islamic tile project. As part of our Arabian Peninsula unit, students learned about the lasting legacies and innovations of Muslim peoples during the Middle Ages. Students saw samples of the calligraphy and geometric designs used in Muslim art, specifically with interior designs of buildings, pottery, books, and sewing. Using this as inspiration, students painted their own designs onto tiles.\r\n\r\nWith both these projects, students were able to demonstrate learning with a more creative outlet. These are the types of projects students will remember after their time in seventh grade.","fullyFundedDate":1764710606641,"projectUrl":"project/history-with-h-art/9754764/","projectTitle":"History with H-art","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Bird","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9856861"},{"teacherId":3964088,"projectId":9833630,"letterContent":"Thank you for the donation of badminton rackets to our PE program. Your support is already making a clear difference- not just in my bookshelves, but in what and how my students are learning.\r\n\r\nThese new texts have helped introduce and strengthen the key reading and literary skills I teach, including: vocabulary development and use of context clues, close reading and text evidence to support ideas, making inferences and analyzing character motivation, identifying theme, tone, and author's purpose, comparing perspectives and recognizing text structure, research and synthesis for projects and presentations, and building discussion skills: citing evidence, building on others' ideas, and respectful debate. \r\n\r\nI received many dystopian books and we are going to begin our Dystopian Book Clubs unit in about a month, so I know students will thoroughly enjoy not just the books, but the series that now accompany Book 1 for several titles! \r\n\r\nReading in our classroom looks active and varied. We use a workshop model with brief mini-lessons, independent reading time, literature circles and partner discussions, regular book talks, and short writing reflections that connect reading to thinking and argument. Students practice close-reading routines, annotate texts, and frequently share insights aloud so they learn to support ideas with evidence. We also have a free reading SSR time on Fridays for about 30 minutes every week. Students are quizzing themselves on their reading comprehension by using Accelerated Reader to take quizzes and earn points toward their ultimate goal: The 40 Book Challenge! \r\n\r\n\r\nWe are deeply grateful!! Throughout the school year, students have exchanged thoughtful letters with a partner, building connection, reflection, and growth through written communication. Now, with the art materials you helped provide — including washi tape, stickers, markers, and scrapbooking paper — they are transforming those letters into personalized memory books.\r\n\r\nIn class, students are carefully assembling their collections of letters, decorating pages to reflect their personalities, inside jokes, shared memories, and meaningful moments from the year. One of the sweetest moments happened when a student said, \"This doesn't feel like an assignment anymore — it feels like something I'll actually keep.\" The materials have elevated the project from a simple compilation of letters to a creative keepsake that represents their entire 8th grade journey. Many of them don't often have access to specialty craft materials like these, so seeing high-quality art supplies just for them made the experience feel important and valued.\r\n\r\nNext, students will continue finalizing their memory books by adding reflection pages about what they learned through written communication, friendship, and personal growth this year. Once completed, they will take these books home to share with their families and, in many cases, continue the connection with the partner they corresponded with. My hope is that years from now, they'll open these books and remember not just middle school — but the power of words and connection.\r\n\r\nThank you for helping make this culminating experience creative, meaningful, and lasting.
