With the ukuleles from this project, students are able to learn about elements of music, including rhythm, pitch, and harmony, in a truly hands on experience. When students entered the room and saw the ukuleles for the first time, many were excited while others were curious. What were we going to be doing with those things? A number of students have never had the opportunity to play an instrument like the ukulele - you can imagine their excitement!\r\n\r\nStudents have thoroughly enjoyed playing along with pop music, developing their finger dexterity and musical ears. We have been working diligently on learning a variety of chords by rote, and have just begun learning to read notation and apply it to the ukulele. Our next steps are to get them more fluent in reading and playing by ear, and then working on writing their own songs!\r\n\r\nYour donations have made these projects possible. Students will now have the opportunity to compose, perform, and record (yes, our school has a recording studio!) their own musical creations. As a first-year 8th grade teacher, I was passionate about fostering a love of reading, and these books truly transformed our independent reading time. My students lit up at the chance to read New Kid, March, Nimona, and other incredible titles—books that felt relevant, accessible, and visually engaging. I watched reluctant readers devour page after page, often asking if they could borrow books to read at home. It sparked meaningful conversations, authentic book recommendations among peers, and even impromptu mini book clubs during lunch.\r\n\r\nI still remember the day I introduced the new graphic novels—students crowded around the shelf, some gasping at the cover art, others calling out, \"I've wanted to read this forever!\" One student who hadn't finished a book all year ended up reading three graphic novels that month alone. Their enthusiasm created a ripple effect in our classroom culture; books became something to look forward to, not something to dread.\r\n\r\nNow that I'm teaching high school, I still incorporate graphic novels into my classroom when I can. I often reflect on that foundational year and how powerful it was to see reading come alive for my students. That project helped lay the groundwork for how I approach literacy today—meeting students where they are, and honoring what they love. Thank you for being part of that.","fullyFundedDate":1641332026307,"projectUrl":"project/kates-quest-for-graphic-novels/6087485/","projectTitle":"Kate's Quest for Graphic Novels","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Puckett","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8260033_orig.jpg?crop=1358,1358,x341,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1683482434168","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8260033"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_2782","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":534,"numTeachers":43,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":3,"percentBlack":46,"percentWhite":20,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":25,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"6 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"12.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_MIDSIZE"},"inStateSupporters":65.2,"schoolId":2782,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Penn - Griffin School for the Arts on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Penn - Griffin School for the Arts","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/guilford-county-schools/penn-griffin-school-for-the-arts/2782"}
