In a school setting, we always hope for the best, but we must be prepared for the unexpected. Your support has given us a vital tool to do exactly that.\r\n\r\nBefore this project was funded, transporting an injured or severely ill student across our campus was a major challenge. When a student is in distress, every second counts, and trying to safely navigate a large school without the proper equipment compromised both efficiency and student dignity.\r\n\r\nSince the wheelchair arrived, it has already transformed how we handle health emergencies and daily student care. We are now able to transport students safely, quickly, and comfortably from the playground, classrooms, or athletic fields straight to the health room. This resource not only ensures physical safety for the students and staff alike, but it also provides an immense sense of relief and security to the children when they are at their most vulnerable.\r\n\r\nYour donation did so much more than purchase a piece of medical equipment; it directly upgraded the safety net of our entire school community. Your contributions have done so much more than just fill our supply bins; they have fundamentally transformed the energy and culture of our learning environment.\r\n\r\nThis year, we've integrated your gifts into a comprehensive incentive program. Whether it's the pencil cases helping students take pride in their organization, or the scented pencils making writing workshops a sensory delight, these items have become powerful \"spark plugs\" for academic engagement. The jewelry rings and bubble wands have turned into coveted prizes for small wins, turning hard work into a tangible celebration.\r\n\r\nHowever, the most profound impact has been on our Social Emotional Learning (SEL). We use the slinky toys and bouncy balls as tactile tools for self-regulation, helping students find focus when they feel overwhelmed. During recess and brain breaks, the kickball hacky sacks have become a bridge for social connection, encouraging teamwork, patience, and inclusive play among peers who might not otherwise interact.\r\n\r\nBeyond the physical objects, your kindness has taught my students a vital SEL lesson: community care. They see that people they may not even know are invested in their success and happiness. This sense of belonging is the foundation upon which all other learning is built.\r\n\r\nWatching a student's face light up when they earn a reward they've worked toward for a week is a joy I wish I could share with you in person. Students enjoyed making music and learning practice beats. \r\nDuring intervention time, the students thought it was very helpful to have the dry erase boards available to use and the dry erase markers worked perfectly with our lessons and activities. When I first posted this project, I hoped to bring a little extra joy and functionality to our classroom, but I couldn't have imagined the sheer excitement your donation would spark. My students were absolutely thrilled to see the boxes arrive; unboxing the snacks, art supplies, and fidget toys felt like a holiday for them. Your support has truly transformed our daily environment into a place where my kids feel seen, nourished, and motivated.\r\n\r\nThe variety of snacks you provided—from the Biscoff cookies and popcorn to the fruit snacks, chips, and mints—has been a complete game-changer. These treats are especially meaningful during recess; I often have students come to me asking for a little something to eat, and being able to hand them a snack ensures that no one spends their break on an empty stomach. Having these on hand makes the kids so excited to come to school, knowing that their basic needs and their \"cravings\" are both cared for by their community.\r\n\r\nI have also been using these items, including the fidget toys, as special incentives to celebrate hard work and kindness. The fidgets have become essential tools for helping my students stay regulated and focused, allowing them to channel their energy productively during lessons. I've seen a noticeable shift in engagement when students have a sensory tool to help them concentrate or a small reward to strive for. It's amazing how much a simple pack of fruit snacks or a fidget spinner can boost the morale of the entire room.\r\n\r\nThe creative side of this project has been just as impactful, as the colored pens and paper punchers were the exact \"upgrades\" we needed for our Project-Based Learning. My students used these new supplies to take their PBL Trifolds to the next level, adding vibrant details and professional-looking designs that they were so proud to display. Watching them take such ownership of their work was a highlight of our semester. These supplies gave them the confidence to express their ideas boldly and showed them that their hard work deserves high-quality tools.\r\n\r\nThank you again, Hawaii DOE, for believing in my students and providing the resources that make our classroom a thriving community. You have provided more than just supplies; you have provided the nourishment that keeps them going at recess, the tools that inspire their projects, and the incentives that keep them striving for their best. We are so lucky to have partners like you who care so deeply about the success and happiness of our keiki. We received paint, scissors, organizational bins, and construction paper, and each material has supported meaningful, hands-on learning experiences.\r\n\r\nOne example is our current PBL unit, \"How light and sound affect emotions.\" Students have used paint and construction paper to visually represent how different sounds and lighting can influence feelings. They have created expressive artwork that connects science concepts with social-emotional learning, and these projects have sparked thoughtful conversations and deeper understanding of how our senses impact our emotions.\r\n\r\nWe also used construction paper during our literacy instruction to explore mental images and poetry. Students illustrated what they visualized while listening to poems, then used those drawings to strengthen comprehension and make text-to-self and text-to-world connections. The scissors and organizational bins have supported students in independently managing materials and building responsibility during centers and group work.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate. They were eager to sort, explore, and create, and many asked right away when they could start using everything. That excitement quickly turned into purposeful engagement as they began using the materials to support real learning tasks rather than just crafting.\r\n\r\nAs we continue forward, students will build on these experiences by extending their understanding of how sensory input influences emotion and storytelling. They will continue using the materials to design projects that combine writing, art, and science concepts. These resources will also support ongoing small group instruction, giving students more opportunities to demonstrate understanding in creative and differentiated ways.","fullyFundedDate":1771617780784,"projectUrl":"project/first-grade-chaos/10104844/","projectTitle":"First Grade Chaos","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mejia","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-3_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10437945"},{"teacherId":8974392,"projectId":10104268,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations. I have started to dedicate one day a week to 'mindless' creative writing, using the wordless picture books as the foundation for our 'Silent Storyboard' project. Instead of starting with a daunting blank page, students sit in their wobbly chairs—allowing their bodies to stay active and calm—while 'reading' the visual cues in the books. They then work in partners or triads to develop the most creative narrative possible within a set timeframe.\r\n\r\nI serve students with special needs and other health impairments; this year, 70% of my class falls into this category. Because of this, having tactile fidgets is essential to help ease their anxiety and overstimulation so they can focus and decompress. One of my students, who often struggles with severe overstimulation during transitions, instinctively reached for a textured fidget during class recently. Instead of becoming overwhelmed by the noise of the classroom, they were able to stay grounded in their seat. This small tool allowed them to move from a state of 'fight or flight' back into a 'ready-to-learn' mindset, eventually enabling them to complete the task to the best of their ability.\r\n\r\nAll in all, my students and I greatly appreciate your generous donation, which helps ensure they remain emotionally regulated and academically successful.","fullyFundedDate":1771508418661,"projectUrl":"project/ensuring-student-creativity-success/10103078/","projectTitle":"Ensuring Student Creativity & Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Chong","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp4952112_orig.jpg?crop=2311,2311,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1651533105531","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/jchong"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_50905","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":371,"numTeachers":34,"percentFrplEligible":21,"percentAsian":6,"percentBlack":10,"percentWhite":44,"percentIndigenous":1,"percentLatinx":18,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","percentHawaiianImputed":2,"percentMultiracialImputed":17,"gradesServed":"Pre-K - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"10.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":69.7,"schoolId":50905,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Pearl Harbor Kai Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/hawaii/central-oahu-school-district/pearl-harbor-kai-elementary-school/50905"}
