They arrived right before our big trip to Anaheim, CA to perform onstage in Disney's California Adventure as part of their Disney's Imagination Campus program! \r\n\r\nMy initial reaction to receiving the strings was, \"Yes! Thank you! We have been so low on supplies and we needed more!\" When performing in new concert venues, I always keep an emergency kit with me and part of that kit involves brand new strings. Students strings break all the time and not having to stress about having enough supplies means a great deal to my students and myself. I do not have to tell a student, \"I'm so sorry, you are going to have to wait until I order more strings\" helps our music program continue on without skipping a beat. A quick string change from me and they are off practicing or rehearsing for their next performance. \r\n\r\nOur next steps this year is to continue our annual fall and spring concerts as well as compete in the California Music Educator Association festival in April. This will be a new adventure for orchestra and we hope to impress the judges with our performance and sight reading skills! We also plan to compete in the Music in the Park Festival at either Great America theme park or Six Flags: Discovery Kingdom theme park. These are even sturdier than the ones we currently have!\" Knowing that the instruments would be safe while traveling from Northern California to Southern California on a truck brought relief and hope that we would have a successful field trip. The students were impressed by the quality of the new cello cases and started to ask who would be \"gifted\" the opportunity to try them out first. They LOVE that the cases has wheels--making it easy to transport to and from school. \r\n\r\nOur next steps this year is to continue our annual fall and spring concerts as well as compete in the California Music Educator Association festival in April. This will be a new adventure for orchestra and we hope to impress the judges with our performance and sight reading skills! We also plan to compete in the Music in the Park Festival at either Great America theme park or Six Flags: Discovery Kingdom theme park. This was very meaningful and important for our students, many of which like to come to the counseling room to destress. The donations started trickling in during early December, which is a stressful time for many students due to the holidays and end of the semester. It was a lot of fun to see their faces light up as boxes of supplies arrived and wanting to open them to see all the great donations!\r\n\r\nWe use our counseling office to host a variety of events and clubs, including our Multicultural Club, which brings in a lot of students to come together and share aspects of through culture through experiences, food, and getting to know to learn about other students' culture. The snacks have also helped during our club meetings to give them something small to eat. When donations first arrived, our club was working on entering a multicultural holiday door competition. Students dedicated their lunch afterschool time to complete an elaborate and artistic door, using the supplies we received part of this project. While the group of students didn't win the competition, they expressed enjoying having a space on campus to hang out and work together. It brought students that are not friends together and these students consistently show up to our counseling office.\r\n\r\nOur snacks, school supplies, and fidget toys have been very useful for our small academic and social-emotional groups. They allow for students to maintain focus and keep up with their work in their classes.
