First graders are at an exciting time in their reading life; they are just on the cusp of discovering how words carry messages. In this time of their reading life, it's very important for them to have lots of texts to read, in a variety of forms and about a variety of topics. \r\n\r\nEvery week when our new Scholastic News arrives, the students are so excited to find out what topic it's about. They love \"going on a picture walk\" through the newspaper, where we look at the pictures and talk about them before reading the words.\r\n\r\nNext we take turns reading aloud the words in the newspaper. Along the way we talk about what we're reading; the topics are always interesting to talk about. Then the students take the newspaper to their desk to read again on their own.\r\n\r\nYour gift has improved my students' lives immensely.
