Having a full class set has given each of my fourth-grade students the opportunity to hold their own copy, follow along closely, and fully participate in our novel study. We are using the story to strengthen important reading skills such as identifying theme, analyzing characters and their motivations, making inferences, using context clues, and supporting our thinking with evidence from the text. Instead of practicing these skills only through short passages, students are able to see how they develop across an entire story.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is interactive and collaborative. We stop to discuss important moments, make predictions, annotate our thinking, and share connections we notice. I especially love seeing students who may not always be the first to participate become invested in Mia's story and eager to share what they think will happen next. Having their own books also gives students the independence to go back into the text, find evidence, and confidently contribute to our conversations.\r\n\r\nMost importantly, these books have helped create a shared reading experience for our class. My students are building their reading comprehension and critical-thinking skills while also exploring lessons about perseverance, kindness, empathy, and standing up for what is right. Thank you for giving my students a book they can learn from, connect with, and enjoy together.
