My students didn't just make stickers; they became \"positivity ambassadors.\" Watching them carefully weed out the tiny letters of a \"You Matter\" or \"Keep Going\" sticker was a lesson in patience and Mālama (care). The best part, though, was seeing them nervously but excitedly hand these tiny gifts to random people on campus. They got to see a teacher's face brighten or a fellow student crack a smile, and in that moment, they realized they have the power to change someone's day. It turned our classroom into a hub of Aloha, where the goal wasn't just to finish an assignment, but to connect with their community.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we are so excited to keep this momentum going! Our next step is to create \"Values Decals\" for our classroom and common areas. Kōkua means to help, and giving our closet a Hawaiian name grounds the work in our shared responsibility to care for one another. Our youth leaders are the example. They organize the space, sort donations into men's, women's, and gender neutral sections, and make sure every student feels respected when they walk in. When new resources arrive, their faces light up. It means fewer hard conversations about what we do not have. It means more students leaving with what they need.\r\n\r\nKC serves youth in grades 7 through 12, including special education students and fully self contained classrooms who frequent the room most. Your generosity strengthens a student led effort to sustain basic clothing and hygiene needs on our campus. The next step for our students is continuing to build leadership through design, fundraising, and service so the closet remains stocked and sustainable. You are not just giving supplies. After the students were introduced to anaerobic respiration, and specifically fermentation, they began researching a fermented food of their choice. Bringing in the Deluxe Kombucha Brewing Kits from The Kombucha Shop you funded was a natural for this unit.\r\n\r\nThe students were intrigued by the kits, and the first day they unpacked them you could see their curiosity piqued as they examined and cleaned all the components. They asked many questions and were especially curious about the SCOBY (symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast).\r\n\r\nThe next day, they brewed the tea and added the sugar and SCOBY. They documented the temperature and pH of their teas. The gallon jars were then set off to the side to ferment. Fermentation lasted about a week, and every day the kids would check on their kombucha and talk about how the SCOBY was growing and when it floated or sank.\r\n\r\nBottling day was very exciting! Students worked collaboratively and shared various aspects of the process. It was a great day to be a teacher. They made labels, added a little juice to the bottles, and used funnels and ladles to fill each bottle. We then waited about a week and today they each placed one of their bottles in the refrigerator. Our hope is that they are now carbonated. Tomorrow is tasting day! This is one of the coolest labs I've ever done as a biology teacher.\r\n\r\nWhen I requested this funding, I mentioned a dream of starting a school-based business of producing kombucha. Your kindness, support, and belief in the importance of education have made a meaningful difference in the lives of our students and in our learning environment as a whole. Because of you, our classroom is not just a place where lessons are taught, but a space where curiosity is encouraged, creativity is nurtured, and students feel supported and inspired every single day.\r\n\r\nYour donations have helped provide essential materials, resources, and opportunities that directly enhance our students' learning experiences. From classroom supplies and educational tools to books, technology, and hands-on learning materials, your generosity has allowed us to go beyond the basics and truly enrich our curriculum. These resources help our students engage more deeply with lessons, explore new ideas, and develop skills that will serve them well both inside and outside the classroom.\r\n\r\nMore importantly, your support sends a powerful message to our students: that their education matters and that there are people in the community who care about their growth, success, and future. Knowing that others believe in them helps build confidence, motivation, and a sense of belonging. Many of our students may not always realize how much effort and generosity goes into creating a supportive learning environment, but they absolutely feel the impact of it every day.\r\n\r\nBecause of your contributions, our classroom has become a more welcoming, dynamic, and inclusive space. Students are able to collaborate more effectively, participate in hands-on activities, and express themselves creatively. Lessons come to life in ways that textbooks alone cannot achieve.
