However, when students did have opportunities to use them, they were very excited and highly engaged. They loved creating, exploring, and working together with the hands-on materials. We built masterpieces and joked about the strips looking like veggie strips, while the unit could be little skittles or popcorn. \r\n\r\nWe have been using our manipulatives to better understand place value as it pertains to multi-digit addition and subtraction equations. Students are better able to understand how borrowing and regrouping actually affects the numbers involved. They have been able to use the visual representations of mats, strips, and units to explain their thoughts and evidence in solving equations. \r\n\r\nIn addition to our new base ten pieces, having new headphones and a pencil sharpener have made starting the day a routine.
