My students loved doing the gel electrophoresis labs and bacteria transformation lab. The new incubator is awesome. We got very good results with it to transform bacteria. Every group had at least one neon green glowing colony. Some groups had several transformed colonies. Students were able to successfully genetically modify and organisms in class. For 3 weeks students learned how to use micropipettes, pour gels, use the electrophoresis machine and apply difficult concepts of microbiology. AP Biology is a challenging and difficult course but we really work up to the biotechnology unit at the end. It is the moment in class where they really feel like a scientist getting to use all the equipment and run their gels that they feel like they're someone in the research field. It's one of my favorite things to teach. This was so important for all of the biotech labs we did to store all of the reagents. All of the reagents and samples for biotech are either refrigerated or kept in a freezer and cannot be at room temperature because they lose potency. This was so necessary and appreciated. My student set up the fridge for the class. The various soils were great additions to the class as we have an assortment of carnivorous plants in the classroom. Students learned about plant adaptation and how some plants need to feed on organisms from nutrients rather than the soil. My students had so much fun dissecting the rat. Before that they also dissected an earthworm and a frog. They love learning about body systems and the different organisms. The anatomy unit also has great connections to evolution to learn how structures evolved over time and the diversity of life. My students also love the microscopes. They used the new insect slides to look at structures as well. Thank you so much for these hands on materials. My students absolutely loved them. It has really helped charge all the scales and biotech equipment for my classes. All my science classes that I teach use scales for certain labs. The designated station helps so much. We also have used the other materials on our science notebooks. Colored pencils are a necessity for school as they're used for projects and diagrams. We also use the markers for poster projects on cellular processes. My lab assistants have set up the new lights and put them on a timer. The paper has been used for various projects on Environmental Science plant comics and also biology cell cards. We also used the colored paper for name tents. Tape really comes in handy when they put together models and also to put up their student work in the classroom or in the hallways.\r\nOur next unit in Environmental Science will be on communities. They will be doing a symbiotic relationships project where we will use the rest of the paper. The students have already started planning how the yearbook will look and what their roles as journalists consist of. They have also already set up the photo equipment and practiced taking portraits of each other in anticipation of the school photo make up sessions they will run. This is such a huge win for our school because it will allow us to make sure more students are included in their yearbook. \r\n\r\nThank you again for helping my students do the good work they do on behalf of their school and community. My AP biology class used the Wisconsin Fast Plants seeds in their Genetics unit. They did an inquiry lab where they were given different seeds from the Parental, F1 and F2 generations. They had to grow the populations and look at the observable, inherited traits. By the end they were able to figure out this was a dihybrid cross, assign correct genotypes and phenotypes to each of the generations. At the conclusion of the lab they also used the entire glass data of 100 seedlings to calculate a chi squared analysis. The other various materials were used to propagate plants and used for their photosynthesis labs. Our next project that we are working on to do in the spring is incorporated carnivorous plants into the curriculum. So far I have been growing out different various carnivorous plants and the students will use the lights, containers, and other materials to culture some of them. The AP Biology Biotech lab series is so much fun for the students. They really feel like scientists in their lab classroom. We spend two weeks where the students learn how to use different micropipettes, make dilutions and do a fun color by number activity. They also learn how to pipette on different surfaces and do some target practice. Once they have developed their micropipette skills the first lab they did was the Sickle Cell Lab. They were given a case study of a family that has a family history of sickle cell disease. The students did their research, created Punnett squares, made a pedigree to track how far back in the family tree the gene went. Then they micropipetted the simulated DNA samples into their agarose gels and ran performed gel electrophoresis. They were able to analyze and confirm which of their children and newborn baby had sickle cell disease. The Fungus Among us Lab was a fun lab for the students to test different samples of where outbreaks are. The class had to come together and use their gel electrophoresis results to come together and figure out where the hotspots are. The Bacteria Transformation Lab is always a fun lab where the students were able to genetically modify bacteria with a glowing gene. This lab series is such a great way to conclude AP Biology. I teach the course on a quarter basis so it goes by quickly. They loved this experience so much and I know when they go to college in 1-2 years they will be studying biology. My students enjoyed learning about chi square analysis for AP Biology. They had to do a chi square test with the different candies. Doing math and stats in biology isn't very glamorous but the candies definitely spark their interest and make it more enjoyable. It is always a nice treat and reward to have a little candy after learning challenging concepts. Every time we review vocabulary for a unit we play different review games and the winning prizes are fruit snacks, goldfish, or a piece of candy. My students enjoy learning about chromosomal abnormalities and nondisjunction. Students were given different case files on patients and had to diagnose the patient by looking at different karyotypes. They matched chromosomes on their boards and were able to observe and identify where the mistakes were. After the lab the students then had to create a project where they made a comic strip about the case and how it should be treated. They also learned about how to support a person or family with a disorder. The students attended our Unified Sports games where students with special needs played flag football and kickball.
