Most seem very happy to leave them away and just \"be\" and \"experience\" the classroom and outdoor environment.\r\n\r\nI'm happy to be following guidance from multiple studies and children-focused organizations. From awayfortheday.com: \"According to a research study of American teens ages 12-15, those who used social media over three hours each day faced twice the risk of having negative mental health outcomes, including depression and anxiety symptoms. Teenagers in the United States who spend 3 hours or more a day on electronic devices are at a 35% higher risk of suicide than those who spend less than one hour on them. Eighth graders who are heavy users of social media have a 27% higher risk of depression than kids who exceed the average time playing sports or hanging out with friends.\"\r\n\r\nThank you so much for your contribution to my classroom and supporting students!!","fullyFundedDate":1757799141793,"projectUrl":"project/lets-ditch-the-phones-and-focus-on-scie/9538489/","projectTitle":"Let's Ditch the Phones and Focus on Science!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cole","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-9_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8007657"},{"teacherId":2974959,"projectId":9820904,"letterContent":"Thank you for your generosity and support of my amazing students. One freshman who was hesitant to touch a microscope early in the semester became the class \"micro-photographer,\" documenting crystal-clear images of bacterial colonies for everyone to analyze. Another group used the adapters to record time-lapse videos of yeast fermentation bubbles for our \"Microbe Munch\" lab — data they later graphed and presented in their CER conclusions.\r\n\r\nThe excitement in the lab is contagious (in the best possible way). Students crowd around the screens comparing focus levels and colors, calling out discoveries like, \"I think that's a dividing cell!\" Their curiosity is driving authentic science learning, and your gift made that possible.\r\n\r\nYour donation didn't just provide equipment — it opened a window into a living, hidden world. Last year a couple of the students that were distractions in other classes were brought to the back of my classroom to relax and collect themselves before going back to their regular math class. One even requested that I was their teacher the next year because the lighting helped them remain calmer and he felt less like he was going to lose control of himself. \r\n\r\nYou have helped create this space with the lighting change. In a math classroom so many students have math anxiety but with warmer lighting the anxiety is reduced enough that they can start to build their confidence back up and are willing to try. Having the white board space allowed me to have more students at the board presenting and sharing ideas as well as have space for announcements, schedules, etc. \r\n\r\nThis white board changed my classroom environment. Prior to the white board I was having to use a document camera and project work. This works to show math but I found myself sitting and working out problems under the document camera and students were more likely to work alone and bring a paper up to show it to students. A lot of explanations from students were lacking as they would just show the paper and give minimal explanation. Now with the white board space I may project a graph or something on the white board but the students are writing their work on the board and sharing their steps and thinking as they go. Students are showing deeper understandings just through this small addition to my classroom. Students also love writing on the whiteboards so I have more of them not just volunteering but asking if they can come up and show their idea on the board. Near the end of the year I had students going up to the board to show their work where they knew a mistake had been made because they wanted to ask the class where they went wrong. Great discussions come from this.","fullyFundedDate":1691038358998,"projectUrl":"project/white-board/7466352/","projectTitle":"White Board","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Crutcher","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-5_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/6578148"},{"teacherId":2264230,"projectId":9298637,"letterContent":"I am happy to report that my students enjoyed their medieval costumes for acting out \"El caballero de Olmedo.\" Thank you for supporting this project!\r\n\r\nI have to share with you a few twists and turns that our project took. \r\nUnfortunately, the costumes I had ordered turned out to be unavailable! (Maybe they are a Halloween item?) However, I was determined not to let the opportunity to engage with the text slip away from us. I ventured out to a thrift store warehouse, and proceded to purchase $40 worth of used clothing to \"upcycle\" into medieval costumes on my own, using my sewing skills. \r\n\r\nSince I paid for the used clothing out of my own pocket, I felt confident that you would be happy to support the purchase of additional Spanish language young adult books for my high school classroom, which is Spanish Language Arts. \r\n\r\nSo, entirely unplanned, your gift had a double impact! They are accountable to demonstrate both time reading and comprehension in their reading. Their weekly bookmark is a part of the class grade. During our recent unit on cellular respiration, students have used the pop boards and Needohs to channel restless energy during group discussions, letting them focus more deeply on complex biochemical pathways. The whiteboards and chalk markers have transformed quick \"think-pair-share\" moments—students sketch their models of mitochondria and annotate each step of ATP production right at their desks. And when mid-lesson hunger strikes would threaten to derail our momentum, the healthy trail mixes and granola bars refueled tired minds so that our investigations into fermentation—and the real-world implications for food science—could continue without interruption.\r\n\r\nWhen the boxes arrived, a ripple of excitement shot through the room: one student exclaimed, \"It's like Christmas in March!\" as she examined the squishy fidgets, and groups clamored to be the first to map out their hypotheses on the whiteboards. That enthusiasm carried right into their lab work yesterday, where you could hear students cheer when their yeast-powered balloon experiments succeeded. It was a real \"aha\" moment—both for our lesson and for the power of having the right tools at hand.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we're building on this momentum by asking students to design their own mini-experiments on environmental factors that affect yeast activity. They'll use the fidgets to stay grounded during peer-review sessions, use the whiteboards to draft and revise their experimental protocols, and grab a healthy snack before presenting their results to the class. Thanks to you, these 120+ students are not only learning about science; they're experiencing the confidence and focus that come from feeling supported—mind, body, and spirit.","fullyFundedDate":1738792653326,"projectUrl":"project/a-project-to-support-young-hearts-minds/8932863/","projectTitle":"A Project to Support Young Hearts, Minds, and Stomachs.","teacherDisplayName":"Dr. Pete","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9831392_orig.jpg?crop=768,768,x355,y81&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1731352739468","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9831392"},{"teacherId":9822662,"projectId":8914738,"letterContent":"Over the past several months I have been able to create relationships with students I wouldn't have met otherwise. I deeply appreciate your generosity through the gift of games for my students to connect over and graphic novels to spark their interest in reading. \r\n\r\nThe graphic novels have become a wonderful resource for all of my students this year. I have been able to put them into the hands of many reluctant readers, who ended up enjoying them despite themselves. The Percy Jackson graphic novels have been especially popular, even sparking the interest of a few students enough to pick up the novels from the library to continue the series. I have also loved the addition of some great classics in graphic novel form. Those have pushed students out of their genre comfort zones and stretched them in great ways. \r\n\r\nOne of the best and most surprising tools for connection I was gifted has been the magnet words set. It lives on my dry erase board, and has become one of my favorite features in the classroom; not only as a decoration but also as a passive opportunity for connection. I've witnessed some deep and meaningful poetry, messages between class periods, frustrations vented, and some good-natured silliness to bring it all together. \r\n\r\nYour donations have improved the culture for my students this year, and will continue to do so for the years to come.
