This project is amazing- (says student)-The Mini but Mighty lab was indeed a hit! For a home bound student who takes classes online, there are limited opportunities to use laboratory equipment (such as pipettes and electrophoresis). For some students, the equipment works well for demos, but it was a goal for me to support my high school students with a hands-on experience using the same equipment I was trained with. It took a while to coordinate how to use this lab for a home bound remote student, but it was well worth it! Because we work 1:1, I will feature the work of one high school scholar who was fully engaged in the experience. (As an added bonus, it was a family experience as mom handled the picture taking!)\r\n\r\nThe Edvotek \"Who's DNA was left behind\" is a classic activity using electrophoresis to create a DNA barcode model. The experience also supports skills such as pipetting, aseptic technique, as well as background content (i.e. DNA structure) The samples are models that return the same result, so you know if the procedure was done correctly. I've worked in facilities/schools where a story was created around the results (like a mystery) but needed something simpler that a student could use independently. So, I wrote a new one.\r\n\r\nThe mystery is a short story about a DNA sample left by a suspect at a pet shop crime scene that could only be one of two characters (Ned Natural and Suzy Snoop). My student's task was to complete the lab and solve the mystery.\r\n\r\nIn the online classroom, I left videos as support for the lab procedure then delivered the equipment to her house. Because the equipment was so compact, there was no issue with transport or space. She was able to independently complete the lab, and we went over the results in class. Of Course, the mystery was solved (you'll see in the added picture it was that dastardly Ned Natural!).\r\n\r\nThis lab equipment is reusable and durable so it will be used repeatedly and well loved!\r\nThank you again!","fullyFundedDate":1735150060841,"projectUrl":"project/mini-but-mighty-bluegel-electropho/8745028/","projectTitle":"Mini but Mighty! In four weeks, this amazing system created a mini garden (mini salad actually) in a living room. The whole family was so excited to see how quickly plants will grow with hydroponics. \r\n\r\nStudents learn when photosynthesis is continuous the plant will grow quickly. \r\nThrough this experience, we can cover the process of photosynthesis, compare chemical vs physical changes, use microscopes to study plant cells and observe stomata in leaves. This was completed with an experiment designed by the students. \r\n\r\nWe collected data, made observations, drew graphs for visual analysis and discussed improvements for next time.
