Our third grade students used the saw to cut cardboard into a variety of regular and irregular shapes to create folk art masks for our upcoming Cultural Family Night. They carefully assembled their pieces into unique, expressive designs, and it was amazing to see their creativity come to life. Our fifth grade students used the Chomp Saw in a different way by cutting cardboard pieces and arranging them on canvas to create abstract art compositions, then painting over them to add color, depth, and texture. This allowed them to explore both engineering and artistic concepts in one project.\r\n\r\nStudents were immediately excited and curious when they were introduced to the Chomp Saw. Many had never used a tool like this before, and they were eager to learn how it worked. They loved having the opportunity to use a real tool that gave them more control over their materials. It made them feel capable and responsible, and it increased their engagement right away.\r\n\r\nAs we continue these projects, students will build on their skills by refining their designs and exploring new ways to use materials creatively. Third grade students will complete and display their masks at our Cultural Family Night, celebrating global art and creativity. Fifth grade students will continue developing their abstract pieces, focusing on layering, composition, and artistic expression. Moving forward, students will also have more opportunities to design original projects, using the Chomp Saw to bring their ideas to life while strengthening problem-solving and creative thinking skills.","fullyFundedDate":1762265211248,"projectUrl":"project/hands-on-and-hazard-free/9457128/","projectTitle":"Hands-On and Hazard-Free","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Solomon","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp2255539_orig.jpg?crop=1179,1179,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1752183849984","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/solomonk"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_3217","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":224,"numTeachers":15,"percentFrplEligible":91,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":13,"percentWhite":68,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":10,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"14.9:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"RURAL","ncesMetroType":"RURAL_DISTANT"},"inStateSupporters":76.6,"schoolId":3217,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Oak Lane Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Oak Lane Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/north-carolina/person-county-school-district/oak-lane-elementary-school/3217"}
