During a recent introductory training lab, students worked in small groups to begin practicing basic commands using positive reinforcement. With access to treat pouches, clickers, and training treats, students were able to start focusing on timing, consistency, and reading animal behavior. Even in these early stages, it is clear that having the right tools is helping students feel more confident and intentional in their interactions.\r\n\r\nThe enrichment toys and comfort items are also starting to play an important role. Students have begun discussing how to match toys and activities to each animal, especially since every class brings a new personality into the room. This has opened the door for strong conversations about animal welfare, stress reduction, and how to create a positive experience for animals that may be coming from a shelter environment.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, there was immediate excitement. Many recognized the professional level tools and shared that it made the experience feel real, similar to what they might see in a veterinary clinic, shelter, or training facility. It helped shift their mindset toward taking ownership as animal caregivers and future professionals.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, students will continue building these foundational skills as they work toward developing structured training and care plans. They will begin setting behavior goals, selecting appropriate enrichment, and reflecting on what strategies are most effective with different animals. As we continue working with our shelter partners, students will gain experience that is not only hands on, but also meaningful for the animals they are helping prepare for adoption.\r\n\r\nThank you again for supporting our students and helping us build these real world learning experiences.","fullyFundedDate":1767205810832,"projectUrl":"project/paws-practice-enrichment-and-training/9946172/","projectTitle":"Paws & Practice: Enrichment and Training Tools for Future Veterinarians","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Hunter","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10375115_orig.jpg?crop=2540,2540,x211,y322&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1764876578542","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10375115"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_52062","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":1081,"numTeachers":63,"percentFrplEligible":27,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":2,"percentWhite":85,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":6,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"9 - 12","studentTeacherRatio":"17.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":false,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":61.5,"schoolId":52062,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about North Scott High School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"North Scott High School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/iowa/north-scott-community-school-district/north-scott-senior-high-school/52062"}
