In some of them my students will learn about friendship and the power of kindness. In others my students will learn how to descibe emotions, soup, snow or even the winter clothes we wear. Children's books also introduce students to many different kinds of sentences and fun ways to put words together from rhyming books to paragraphs of text in chapter books, it all helps them learn new things. We explore new categories and subjects through each new book. We also work on answering questions, noticing things in the pictures and asking big wondering questions.\r\n\r\nIn my room, every session we read a book together. We take a book walk and talk about the cover art and who the author is. We make wonderings about what the book might be about. Then, I read the story using an animated story telling approach and this helps my students engage in the story. I ask questions along the way to check for understanding and students making noticing statements about the pictures and words. After we talk about the different parts of the story and new vocabulary.\r\n\r\nI have a second grade and third grade groups of students who have been working with me for several years and when I told them I have some new books to enjoy they were very excited. We have been reading the same set of books for the last few years and one student said she really liked the new books because they weren't boring or old. The students began using the new rug right away and were so surprised by it. When it first came students kept asking what it was, when I told them they were very intrigued.\r\n\r\nThis wonderful rug replaced our previous seating arrangment of velcro dots on the floor. These dots could be moved and were very small. With this new rug students are able to have a designated space for them to fit in and with consistent spots that can not be moved or changed.\r\n\r\nThe rug has lead to better student focus during learning times on the floor with large group.
