It was so fun to share with students when these books arrived.\r\n\r\nIn both English 10 and especially in English 11, students read a lot of classic texts, such as The Crucible, The Great Gatsby, Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, and others. While I think it's important for students to read these classic texts, I also want them to be able to find texts on their own that they can relate to and enjoy. My hope is that by having time built into the week for independent reading for pleasure (every Wednesday), that students will carry on this habit even after they leave my classroom.\r\n\r\nThe books that I chose for this Donors Choose project are ones that I knew my current students would be able to connect with or that they specifically requested. It is so exciting to be able to hand a student a book that they asked for. I even have students come in who are not even \"my\" students who borrow books from me and read them at home. That is always what I hope to create in a classroom library. I want kids to come and ask about books, talk about books, recommend them to their friends, etc. In this way, I hope to create a culture of literacy and an excitement around reading.
