This list of popular and critically acclaimed Young Adult novels will help draw in my reluctant readers and sustain their interest. Many are considered “Hi-Lo” novels. (A hi-lo book, broadly defined, is a title that offers highly interesting subject matter at a low reading level.) The books will be added to the classroom library to be used during independent reading time. I selected the titles with my students' interests in mind. They love action, adventure and romance. Many of the themes these novels address are topics my students are struggling with themselves: identity, family life, immigration, friendships and romantic relationships, bullying, school, peer pressure, etc. Seeing themselves in the protagonists in these pages will engage them and keep them reading.
