Because of you, 8th grade students were able to access a powerful collection of picture books and graphic novels centered on the Civil Rights Movement. These books played exactly the role we hoped they would: they made challenging, complex topics—like systemic racism, school desegregation, and civil disobedience—more accessible and engaging for our students. With vibrant visuals and compelling storytelling, these texts gave students the background knowledge they needed to fully connect with A Mighty Long Way by Carlotta Walls Lanier.\r\n\r\nAs students read Lanier's memoir together, they referred back to the picture books, drawing thoughtful connections between her experiences and those of figures like Emmett Till and Thurgood Marshall. Many were even able to draw connections to current events and activists, reflecting on how the courage and determination of the Little Rock Nine echoes in the movements they see today. The books helped students develop empathy, historical awareness, and a deeper appreciation for the personal sacrifices that shaped our country's path toward justice.
