When our reading block begins, the room completely shifts. Students pull out their copies of Esperanza Rising, quickly find their page, and dive right in. Instead of passive reading, you will see students enthusiastically annotating key passages, discussing character choices with their peers, and tracking Esperanza's emotional and physical journey from a privileged life in Mexico to a migrant labor camp in California. Through these new texts, our students aren't just reading stories; they are building critical literacy skills like analyzing character development, identifying central themes of resilience and family, and understanding how historical context shapes a narrative.\r\n\r\nThe connection our students have formed with Esperanza Rising has been nothing short of magical. They rush into the classroom asking if today is a reading day and light up during specific turning points in the story. They were completely captivated by the dramatic shift when Esperanza has to leave her home, and they spent days passionately discussing the rose mosaic scene and the symbolic meaning behind the valley and the mountain. The excitement doesn't stop when the school bell rings, either. Several parents have reached out to share that their children haven't been this excited about a book all year, telling me about late-night reading sessions under the covers just to see what happens next.\r\n\r\nPerhaps the most touching impact of your donation is how the story has spilled over into our students' real lives. Inspired by the deep connection between Esperanza and her grandmother, a whole group of 5th-grade girls has actually taken up crocheting—just like Abuelita taught Esperanza to do in the book to pass the time and practice patience. Seeing them sit together during free time, yarn in hand, chatting about the characters while working on their stitches, shows just how deeply this story has resonated with them.
