By funding these High-Interest/Low-Readability (Hi-Lo) and Languages Other Than English (LOTE) texts, you haven't just added volumes to our shelves; you have dismantled the barriers that often make reading feel like an exclusionary club. In our classroom, reading now looks like a room full of focused, confident students rather than a group where half are engaged and the other half are hiding behind covers they can't decode.\r\n\r\nFor the educators here, these books are precision tools for building literacy. Many people don't realize that teaching reading to older students who struggle involves a delicate balance: we must provide texts that respect their maturity while matching their current phonetic or vocabulary levels. These Hi-Lo books allow us to teach complex narrative skills—such as analyzing character motivation, identifying subtext, and understanding structural foreshadowing—without the student getting bogged down by archaic or overly dense language. Similarly, our LOTE books allow our English Language Learners to maintain their primary language literacy, which research shows actually accelerates their ability to acquire English.\r\n\r\nThe impact is most visible in the faces of specific students who, until recently, viewed the library with a sense of \"this isn't for me.\" I think of one particular student who has spent years avoiding independent reading time; this week, I found him completely absorbed in a Hi-Lo graphic novel about survival. For our immigrant students, seeing a book in their native language has been a profound moment of validation, making them feel seen and respected by their school community. Because of you, \"reading time\" is no longer a source of anxiety, but a period of genuine discovery and pride. Thank you for making our library a place where every student can find their voice.","fullyFundedDate":1773886008922,"projectUrl":"project/stories-for-every-journey/10154774/","projectTitle":"Stories for Every Journey","teacherDisplayName":"Mr. Haussermann","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp1156949_orig.jpg?crop=288,288,x0,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1729181326059","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/1156949"},{"teacherId":10024021,"projectId":10127834,"letterContent":"Thanks to your generous support, our classroom has transformed into a thriving green space filled with fresh air, vibrant herbs, and the calming scent of growing plants. Through this process, science has come to life—students are not just learning concepts, but applying them in real, meaningful ways.\r\n\r\nYour generosity has made it possible for this experience to continue throughout the entire year, giving students the opportunity to nurture, explore, and take pride in their growth.\r\n\r\nThank you for making this impactful learning journey possible.","fullyFundedDate":1773796457960,"projectUrl":"project/sustainable-urban-farming-at-our-high-sc/10127834/","projectTitle":"Sustainable Urban Farming at Our High School","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Xie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10024021"},{"teacherId":1877314,"projectId":9688578,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations. At our school, like many others, our students thrive on high quality instruction and instructional resources. Gone are the days of textbooks and paper resources and in their place we have digital products. Math work, at least high school level math, doesn't thrive in a digital space. It thrives in the space of tangible work products and resources. The color printer, paper, and ink, have allowed us to bridge the gap between digital products and tangible paper resources/work for our students, especially our special needs students.\r\n\r\nMy students are over the moon that they do not need to rely on an already taxed wifi system to engage in their classwork. Just one day of wonk wifi sends them to the moon; their words not mine. The quality products we are able to provide to our students so they can engage in the math work in our classroom has been a game changer. Color worksheets, supports, and scaffolds have positively impacted their learning and the quality of our classroom environment. \r\n\r\nThank you from the bottom of our hearts for your donations.
