When they come to my office, they love to grab a fidget toy such as a stress ball, or a pop it, playdough to help them relax while talking to me or to borrow one to take to a class.\r\n\r\nThe snacks are a huge hit, many students, some not my own come to grab a snack in the middle of the day, or while talking to me about their credits, future plans after high school or just about stress in their lives. Other counselors have even sent students to me to grab a snack after similar conversations. These resources have helped students learn about and encourage a daily growth mindset using key social emotional learning skills such as self-management. Students use these resources as an independent, small group, or whole group space. Students play games and get to know one another as well as learning about themselves. They've learned key self-regulatory strategies such as yoga and mindfulness. The first time my students accessed these resources they were ecstatic; expressing their gratitude by drawing pictures and planning time to design the space. They kept it clean and organized daily and would use timers for breaks. The next steps were to share their experiences with other classes. As well, students would like to add more resources focusing on Science, history, and the Arts & Crafts! Pleasant Ski Club, which is composed of underrepresented youth from Providence, RI. These students earned the opportunity to learn to ski or snowboard by maintaining a 90% or better attendance rate and a GPA of 85% or higher.\r\n\r\nThanks to generous donors, we were able to equip many of our students with skis, poles, snowboards, and boots for each ski trip. The addition of these carriers has allowed them to take another important step in their journey to becoming skiers and snowboarders—learning to carry and care for their equipment throughout the ski season.\r\n\r\nCarrying and taking care of the ski and snowboard equipment during these trips teaches students valuable skills in responsibility and equipment maintenance. By using the same gear throughout the winter season, they also experience what it feels like to be an owner, fostering a sense of pride and commitment to the sport.\r\n\r\n\r\nBeyond practicality, this experience helps broaden their horizons, build confidence, and foster a sense of belonging in a sport where they are often underrepresented. So far, we have taken students on 3 trips skiing around New England. Through your generosity, students are given all the gear necessary for these trips. We equip them with jackets, snow pants, gloves, hats, base layers, helmets, goggles, and other ski gear. My project and your donations allowed for these students to keep all their gear in bags with tags! \r\n\r\nMost students on our trips have become level 2 skiers being able to complete green and blue runs, make consecutive S-turns, and make hockey stops as needed. Most students have also been on the chair lift at least once. In the upcoming trips, we expect all students to ride the chair lift and many to move up levels in skiing. Thank you for your support. My students and I are so appreciative of your willingness to help us provide new experiences to urban youth.
