The mutes have helped preserve everyone's hearing, while allowing us to focus on balance and blend within the ensemble. The bass drum mallet holder and triangle clip face regular wear and tear and need to be replaced every few years. The floor pillows and other comfort items have transformed my room into a welcoming space where students can relax, feel safe, and speak openly. The fidgets help students manage anxiety and stay present, while the journals give them a private place to process emotions and practice coping skills. The snacks have also been incredibly helpful, especially for students who arrive hungry or need something to help them recharge during the school day.\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were excited and immediately noticed how comfortable and inviting the room felt. Many students gravitated toward the floor pillows and appreciated having a cozy place to sit instead of a traditional desk. One student came in feeling overwhelmed, selected a snack and a fidget, and settled onto a floor pillow. After having time to regulate, the student was able to talk about what was happening and return to class feeling calmer.\r\nOur next step is to continue using these resources while practicing journaling, grounding exercises, emotional check-ins, and stress-management strategies. My goal is for students to learn which tools work best for them so they can use those coping skills more independently. In the past, asking students to put away phones during a test was an uphill battle but adding the chargers has made the hill more like a molehill. \r\nMost importantly, we did increase our test scores. Comparing this year to last year we've seen about a 15% improvement in End of Year test scores. Many students are from tropical nations and are not prepared for the New England weather. Many walk to school or take the public busses, waiting outside to transfer from one route to another. We have had two major snowstorms, four snow days and three virtual days due to the rough weather. Having a hat and gloves is essential to survival in this Providence climate. My students with severe intellectual disabilities have been learning to cook using various appliances. Having an electric skillet has enhanced my students' cooking skills by learning how to pan fry, saute, and deep fry various food items such as chicken, ground beef, potatoes, etc. They will also be beneficial for our May breakfast scheduled for early May, when they will learn how to cook all their breakfast favorites, i.e., scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, homefries, and pancakes. \r\n\r\nLearning to cook using an electric skillet is an excellent opportunity for students with severe intellectual disabilities to work on functional academic skills by creating hands-on learning experiences, as well as working on social skills, as they have to learn to communicate, work with one another, take turns, and use their manners. Having these electric skillets has helped to motivate my students by learning new recipes, which keep them engaged in a fun way. \r\n\r\nThe most important goal for every student who is in my classroom is to teach them to be as independent as possible by the time they graduate or exit high school. The students were very excited to learn that we received two brand new electric skillets through your generosity. They enjoy learning to be independent by making simple recipes in the classroom that they can cook at home. Thank you for making learning in my classroom fun and engaging.
