When the materials arrived, students immediately connected with them, not just because the prizes were fun, but because they understood that these tools were part of a system that recognizes who they are and how they show up for our community.\r\n\r\nNow, throughout the day, students earn tickets for demonstrating our Community Values and our Habits of Work and Learning. The raffle box has become a small but powerful moment of anticipation, and the classroom store is a place where students feel proud of the choices they've made. One student told me, \"I'm excited to use the tools and earn prizes for doing my best,\" and another wrote, \"This makes learning more fun.\" Their words say everything.\r\n\r\nThese resources have also made a real difference for students with Behavior Intervention Plans, too! The immediate reinforcement helps them stay focused on their goals, and the sensory tools give them concrete strategies to regulate and reset. I've watched students pause, take a breath, choose a fidget, and return to learning with confidence. Those moments, quiet, intentional, and full of growth, are exactly what this project was meant to support.\r\n\r\nNext, we're continuing to build routines that help students reflect on their choices, recognize their strengths, and take ownership of their learning. It has become one of the most meaningful and effective tools for building financial literacy, responsibility, and positive habits in our self-contained classroom. Each week, students earn classroom dollars by demonstrating empathy, helping others, staying organized, and contributing to the classroom community. They also pay weekly \"rent,\" learn to budget their earnings, and make choices about spending versus saving, all skills that mirror real-world financial decision-making.\r\n\r\nFor many of my students, understanding money has always felt abstract, but the classroom store makes it concrete and accessible. They practice counting, planning, and prioritizing their goals. Some students choose to save their dollars for higher-cost items, learning patience and long-term thinking, while others budget carefully to ensure they have enough for weekly essentials like mechanical pencils or organizational tools. This routine has helped them understand financial concepts such as income, expenses, saving, and consequences for financial decisions.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the structure of the store has supported students' social-emotional development. Earning money for positive behaviors motivates them to be more independent, more responsible, and more thoughtful about how they contribute to the classroom community. Losing money for disorganization or missing materials helps them reflect on their choices and build accountability in a supportive way. Students have begun to take genuine pride in earning their dollars and managing them wisely.\r\n\r\nThe store has transformed Fridays into a celebration of responsibility and hard work. Students feel empowered. Not because they're receiving prizes, but because they're experiencing the real satisfaction of earning something through their choices and effort. For students with learning disabilities, who often face challenges that make school feel discouraging at times, the store has provided a structure where they can consistently experience success.\r\n\r\nOverall, the classroom store has become a vital part of our learning environment. It strengthens financial literacy, reinforces positive behavior, teaches independence, and builds real-world skills that my students will carry far beyond the classroom. It has been one of the most impactful systems I've implemented, and I'm excited to continue growing it so that students can keep developing these lifelong skills.","fullyFundedDate":1758899129441,"projectUrl":"project/prizes-and-fun-items-for-our-classroom-s/9686896/","projectTitle":"Prizes and Fun Items for our Classroom Store!","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Sepulveda","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5635971_orig.png?crop=1024,1024,x455,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1744203714279","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/5635971"},{"teacherId":9820872,"projectId":9731622,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your support with this project. Students are learning about the connection between area and multiplication as they progress from drawing equal groups to arrays. After spending time using square inch tiles to cover different classroom objects, I challenged students to think about how to measure the area of our large rug. They proposed using square pillows, and they worked together to measure the area of our rug in \"square pillows\". This activity made an abstract concept more concrete and tangible for students.
