They immediately started picking out \"their\" leaves, and a few of them were convinced our room turned into a forest. Having the vacuum right there was an unexpected win, too. My kids actually fight over who gets to vacuum the leaves at the end of the day during classroom jobs.\r\nThis rug has totally transformed the center of our room right in front of the main board. Before, we were sitting on a cold, plain floor where everyone was constantly bumping into each other. Now, the leaf pattern gives every student a clear, built-in spot of their own. We use it all day long, for morning meeting, pulling up our lap desks for math, and spreading out with book bins during reading groups. It's made gathering together so much calmer and easier for everyone.\r\nNext up, we'll be using our cozy spot for our upcoming fall science and reading units, gathering right on the rug for read-alouds and group discussions. Students are using the O-Cedar mop, rug, tower fan, and digital clock to practice daily household chores and time-management routines. A specific highlight was our first cooking day using the new air fryer. Students practiced basic math by measuring out ingredients for a healthy recipe. They operated the air fryer safely and independently, bypassing the safety risks associated with a traditional stove. Afterward, when a few students became overwhelmed by the sensory demands of the activity, they successfully used the ambient lighting, ice packs, and blankets in our dedicated sensory corner to regulate and reset.\r\n\r\nStudent Reactions\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, the students were absolutely ecstatic. They immediately crowded around the board games, cheering when they saw Monopoly and The Game of Life. When students saw our room stocked with snacks and birthday treats, there were huge smiles and plenty of happy cheers.\r\n\r\nKnowing food is always available brings them so much comfort. When they saw the birthday supplies, one student beamed and asked, 'We get to celebrate our birthdays in here?!' Adding snacks from this project helped provide a special treat. I usually purchase snacks all year long and this project provided snacks for a few days, which helped me out significantly! \r\n\r\nOur classroom was moved this year and we are in a portable building on the edge of campus. This move made our classroom out of sight and out of mind. The cleaning supplies in this project provided me the necessities to ensure our classroom is clean and I am able to keep the germs away. Another common aspect of elementary school is illness. When the games and materials started arriving, I always open them with my students present and explain who had donated them to our classroom. I spoke of each of you and taught the meaning of the word \"anonymous\" that day! When we open a new game like Volcano Pop, we review the rules, items included, skills focused on, and when we might play the game in the classroom. I chose to open Volcano Pop! with the group of 4th and 5th-graders I had in mind when I selected it for this project. First of all, they LOVE games! Second of all, a game that has a volcano they get to \"pop\" a die out of when they land on certain spaces is just the coolest thing since sliced bread in their minds. They chose to play this game over all others and were so engrossed in the math skills and rules that they did not want to transition to their next class. We will absolutely get a lot of math time with this game.\r\n\r\nYou may have been curious why I had a project full of games and then a large box of glue sticks. The glue provided on campus would not stick a tissue to itself, let alone attach graphs to journals. When my students saw the huge box of glue sticks come in, they were ecstatic! \"We can finally keep things glued in our journals!\" IT's the simple things that often excite us in our classroom. :)\r\n\r\nOur next steps are to master goals and take over the world of elementary school! Many of my students will move on to junior high next year, and this is a complete change for them. It is part of my mission to ensure that the last few months of this school year are fun and uplifting for them, both academically and as humans.
