Students use the new button makers as a creative reward for completing books. After finishing a book, each student fills out a short reflection form about what read. They can either use a pre-printed cover of the book, or they can design and produce their own personalized button. This hands-on process turns reading into a tangible, celebratory event. I vividly remember the first day that we used the machines - a line of students waited eagerly to make their own button. The library buzzed with proud laughter as they pinned their new buttons to their lanyards. The buttons have become visible tokens of reading achievement that students wear with pride and show to their classmates and teachers. This is sparking conversations about books in the hallways and during recess. \r\nThe ripple effects have been amazing. More students are choosing to read during free time, and friendly competition has emerged as students try to earn the most badges. Reading engagement has increased across grade levels and even among staff, who join in and ask the students about their buttons or the last book they read. My students have loved using the microscopes to take a closer look at their world. \r\nThese microscopes have allowed me to show my students patterns and details that would be too small for them to see with just their eyes. We have studied rocks, shells, dirt, worms, and so many other materials. When students walk into my classroom and see the microscopes on the table, they immediately start cheering!\r\nMy fifth graders used the microscopes to look more closely for evidence of biosignatures and to see the different patterns on the underside of leaves compared to the top side. This gave them a better understanding of the parts of a leaf that support photosynthesis, which is such an important concept for them to understand. \r\nYour support has made a big difference in my students' learning.
