These tools have allowed my students to participate in a meaningful, hands on service project creating tie blankets for local nursing home residents. Using the fabric shears, students carefully measured, cut, and assembled fleece blankets, practicing important skills like precision, patience, and teamwork. One especially memorable moment was when a student paused while working and said, \"I hope this makes someone feel less lonely.\" That simple statement captured the heart of this project that students weren't just creating something, they were learning to care for others.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new fabric shears, they were excited to begin. Many had never used real sewing tools before, and having high-quality materials made them feel trusted and capable. Their enthusiasm grew as they saw their blankets come together, and there was a strong sense of pride in their work. \r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to continue building on this experience by expanding our service-learning projects and introducing more textile-based skills. Students will reflect on the impact of their work and explore additional ways they can use sewing and design to help others in their community. We also hope to incorporate basic hand-sewing techniques in future lessons, allowing students to deepen their skills while continuing to give back. These new resources have brought financial literacy to life for my students in a way that is both engaging and meaningful. We have been using the game as part of a real-world budgeting unit, where students take on the role of independent adults managing income and expenses. One memorable moment was when a student realized they had overspent on \"wants\" and didn't have enough left for \"needs,\" sparking a thoughtful class discussion about priorities and decision making. The hands on nature of the game has helped students better understand budgeting concepts.\r\n\r\nWhen students first saw the materials, they were immediately excited and curious. The game format made learning feel fun and competitive, and many students were eager to dive in and start playing right away. Even those who typically struggle with math were highly engaged and motivated to participate. It was rewarding to see students collaborating, problem-solving, and talking through their financial choices with one another.\r\n\r\nAs we move forward, students will build on these skills by creating their own personal budgets based on future career choices. They will research salaries, calculate monthly expenses, and reflect on how their spending decisions align with their goals. Ultimately, these lessons will connect to a larger project where students design a realistic lifestyle plan. Your generosity has made it possible for students to practice essential life skills in a fun, interactive way, and we are incredibly grateful for your support.","fullyFundedDate":1773331094077,"projectUrl":"project/rolling-toward-real-world-money-skills/10121644/","projectTitle":"Rolling Toward Real-World Money Skills: Budgeting Game for Financial Success","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Laukhuf","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp5438338_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1773345186570","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/alaukhuf"},{"teacherId":5438338,"projectId":10121858,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generosity in providing griddles for our Family and Consumer Science classroom. These resources have already made a meaningful impact on how my students learn and engage. We recently used the griddles during a hands-on cooking lab where students prepared pancakes and quesadillas. We practiced measuring and methods of cooking. This project allowed them to practice important life skills such as measuring ingredients, following step-by-step directions, kitchen safety, and teamwork. One memorable moment was watching a group of students successfully flip their pancakes for the first time! There were cheers, laughter, and a real sense of accomplishment!\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the griddles, they were immediately excited and eager to get started. Many of them had never used this type of equipment before, and having access to real cooking tools made the experience feel authentic and special. Their enthusiasm carried throughout the lesson, and even students who are usually more reserved became actively involved. It was incredible to see their confidence grow as they learned new skills and supported one another.\r\n\r\nLooking ahead, we plan to build on this experience by continuing our foods unit with more complex recipes and challenges next year. Students will begin designing their own simple meals, focusing on nutrition, budgeting, and creativity. Eventually, they will apply these skills in a mini \"restaurant project,\" where they will plan and prepare menu items using the griddles and other classroom tools.
