My fifth graders were so excited to have a class pet and learned to care for the betta fish each day. We were going to have a class vote for names, but one of our classmates who joins us from our autistic support class proclaimed, \"I shall call you BLUE!\" one afternoon while taking his turn at feeding. We thought it was a fitting name and decided to keep it! :) \r\nWatching the hydroponic plants grow in the filter planter was a neat experience too. They grew very tall SO fast. Some boys commented that Blue must make good fertilizer! Unfortunately, the plants met the end of their lifecycle quicker than expected and while we were waiting for seeds to appear, some of the plants started molding. I cleaned it all out right away, but we think it led to Blue getting sick and losing some of his beautiful tail. So we had a different learning plan than originally expected! We learned how fish can get fin rot and how they can loose their fins and tails in the process. We researched that they sometimes need to stay in a shallow hospital tank to heal and oftentimes their tails. Blue spent a few weeks at my home with a little warmer environment to help with the healing process. He's doing great, his tail is starting to grow back, and I just did the final preparations on his cycled tank this afternoon so he can head back to our classroom tomorrow! \r\nMy fifth graders and I learned much more than expected with our class pet you helped sponsor. I hope to incorporate some ideas about resilience, caring for others, and growth with Blue as our proof that anything is possible!","fullyFundedDate":1755889568449,"projectUrl":"project/beginning-betta/9568871/","projectTitle":"Beginning Betta","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Temple","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/272x272/tp3024919_272x272.jpg?width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1499950108948","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/temple221"},{"teacherId":3024919,"projectId":9031040,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for upping our game in math! My Kindergarteners LOVED the new Candy Land set and gingerbread game pieces. I easily added our quick look dots to the colored cards and they were adding on right away! My first graders enjoyed playing Jump 1 to count up and back numbers to quickly discard their froggy cards. In second grade, we used the Guess My Number game to reinforce all the place value skills we focused on this year during intervention. They could practice tens & ones and greater than & less than by asking questions to narrow down their numbers. My second graders begged to play Jump 2 all throughout summer school.
