By incorporating forward-facing bookshelves and multi-tier storage units, we've made the library \"browseable\" in a way that prioritizes visual labels and cover art. It also allows deaf and hard of hearing students who use sign language to communicate in an open and well-lit environment. This is crucial for my students, as it allows them to navigate their reading choices and quickly identify titles that spark their interest. The addition of the washable comfy floor seats has defined this space as a tactile area—a quiet, dedicated zone where they can focus on their books without the visual distractions of the main classroom.\r\n\r\nThe collection itself was curated to act as both a mirror and a window for their unique experiences. Including titles like Proud to be Deaf, The William Hoy Story, and C.I. Quest provides my students with essential representation, showing them successful Deaf individuals and relatable stories about cochlear implants and being deaf or hard of hearing. When I read the C.I. quest with a student, she was so happy to see a character who, like her, had cochlear implants. We've bridged the gap to other classics and popular series like The Hunger Games and Percy Jackson. This mix ensures that while they are building their \"Deaf Identity,\" they are also engaging with the same high-interest literature as their hearing peers, all within a space designed specifically for their physical and emotional comfort.","fullyFundedDate":1764718889794,"projectUrl":"project/a-cozy-corner-for-literacy-building-an/9870527/","projectTitle":"A Cozy Corner for Literacy: Building an Accessible Classroom Library","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Prefontaine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10258458_orig.jpg?crop=935,935,x33,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757694841864","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10258458"},{"teacherId":10258458,"projectId":9870160,"letterContent":"Looking at our classroom right now, you can truly see the journey my 5th graders have taken from the flat world of 2D art into the tactile realm of 3D design. We began by creating various art projects in 2D, such as colorful dessert drawings, then using Model Magic clay and other materials to create 3D versions of our work. For my DHH students, visual and tactile feedback is everything; they've been exploring how to blend pigments to create the illusion of depth on a flat surface, using texture tools to scrape and layer the pastels in ways that make the art practically \"pop\" off the panel. Seeing them realize that art doesn't just have to look a certain way, but can feel a certain way, was a huge lightbulb moment for the class.\r\n\r\nThe paintbrush stands also allowed students to help organize and take responsibility for our classroom materials. I was proud to see students cleaning their paintbrushes and placing them in the stands to dry, instead of leaving them dirty after working on a project. \r\n\r\nThe real magic happened when we challenged the students to take those 2D concepts and build upward. Using jumbo craft sticks and pipe cleaners they transitioned into building their art, learning how to manipulate lines into forms. For our deaf and hard of hearing students, these hands-on materials provide a spatial understanding of \"volume\" and \"form\" that a textbook simply can't capture. Throughout these projects, they've learned that art is a multi-dimensional language—one that allows them to express their creativity with confidence and precision.","fullyFundedDate":1764718891242,"projectUrl":"project/3d-art-for-elementary-students/9870160/","projectTitle":"3D Art for Elementary Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Prefontaine","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10258458_orig.jpg?crop=935,935,x33,y0&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1757694841864","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10258458"},{"teacherId":9381141,"projectId":9821006,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous support of our fifth grade science classroom through Donors Choose.
