Each student is reading a book of their own choosing from my newly expanded (thanks to you!) classroom library. A few of the most popular popular titles are \"We Were Here,\" \"I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter,\" \"They Called Us Enemy,\" and \"American Born Chinese.\"\r\n\r\nIt is wonderful to have multiple copies of these titles, because in most class periods all of the copies are in use. I have a emerging bilingual student who is reading \"I Am Not Your Perfect Mexican Daughter\" in Spanish and English at the same time to help develop her English.\r\n\r\nAfter the 10-15 minutes of silent reading, we follow up with either a small-group discussion or a journal entry. This routine is already paying dividends in the form of increased engagement, verbal participation, and interest in borrowing books from the school library. Students are learning how to grocery shop for a week's worth of meals, store ingredients correctly, and reduce food waste. This builds responsibility and reinforces real-world decision-making skills.\r\n\r\nIn addition, the refrigerator helps teach organization and cleaning routines. Students can practice wiping shelves, checking for expired items, and creating systems for labeling food. These tasks promote executive functioning skills such as planning, sequencing, and attention to detail. For students with disabilities, breaking these tasks into clear steps can increase independence and confidence.\r\n\r\nFinally, in a functional living skills classroom, the refrigerator encourages social interaction and collaboration.
