The new materials, such as the flexible seating cushions, color-coded headphones, chair bands, and our cozy canopy corner, have made an incredible difference in helping my students with autism feel safe, focused, and ready to learn each day. Each student now has their own color-coded materials, which helps them easily identify what belongs to them and fosters independence and confidence in daily routines.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new items, their excitement was contagious! They immediately began exploring the flexible cushions. I showed them the parachute, and they loved to play with it. It is perfect for outdoors, as well as indoor recess on rainy days. One of my students, who usually struggles with paying attention, was making the sign for headphones to listen to her tablet. Another student who tends to get anxious during the day uses the chair band to stay grounded and focused. Now he is staying on his chair for longer periods of time. These small but meaningful tools have turned everyday challenges into learning successes.\r\n\r\nWe are now incorporating these resources into our sensory regulation activities and daily lessons. Part of our curriculum includes online activities that are differentiated for each student, and they also have text-to-speech capabilities. The headphones have been very helpful, as they are all on different pages, allowing them to listen to different instructions. The ten-frame magnets have been very helpful for addition and subtraction activities. The fine-motor tools are being incorporated into the centers to reinforce hand grip and support writing activities. The social-emotional learning materials help us practice identifying and managing emotions. Our next step is to expand on these lessons by connecting sensory strategies with academic skills. Teaching students not only what to learn, but also how to regulate themselves while learning.\r\n\r\nThank you once again for making this transformation possible. Your kindness has created a classroom environment where every student feels seen, supported, and empowered to thrive.","fullyFundedDate":1746826941254,"projectUrl":"project/special-needs-for-spedtacular-students/9315870/","projectTitle":"Special Needs for SPEDtacular Students","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Bee","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp8046772_orig.jpg?crop=1290,1290,x0,y210&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1742695026528","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8046772"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_17331","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":569,"numTeachers":null,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":1,"percentBlack":26,"percentWhite":2,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":67,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":null,"demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"URBAN","ncesMetroType":"CITY_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":43.3,"schoolId":17331,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Mitchell Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Mitchell Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/texas/houston-independent-school-district/mitchell-elementary-school/17331"}
