Already this gift has impacted my students positively in several ways! For one, my students are actually reading during reading time! Typically, they would be distracted, off task, and not participating in reading. Now, they are engaged, and I usually have to redirect them once the timer goes off as they continue to read. Second, I've had students ask to take books home so more students are now reading at home on their own. I've also had parents purchase similar books for their own kids at home, which is so cool to see. Finally, my students scores are improving on both their fluency progress monitoring and comprehension check ins. I firmly believe these books have helped support their growth. \r\n\r\nAgain, not only are students reading these books in my classroom, but they are participating in reading in their general education rooms during silent reading time and at home. I've even had to make a reserve sheet so that when a book comes back into my room, we know who gets it next! What a gift these books have been!","fullyFundedDate":1756086674555,"projectUrl":"project/decodable-chapter-books/9631151/","projectTitle":"Decodable Chapter Books","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Claire","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7257310_orig.jpg?crop=396,396,x147,y25&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1591103375042","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7257310"},{"teacherId":7257310,"projectId":9333473,"letterContent":"Morphology Magic is produced by a company called the 95 Percent Group which is one of the leading companies in providing science of reading backed materials which are evidence based and proven to support students who struggle with reading. Using these materials has helped my student hear and say the target morpheme, have them read and write them, learn the meaning, read aloud, and dissect focus words. Each lesson has a systematic routine that helps engage each student and support their orthographic mapping building. This program has really helped my 5th grade students who are proficient in their phonics skills, but are still struggling to read in the upper grades. We're using a curriculum in which students are learning phonics and morphology each day and part of the program is to practice their phonics skill through encoding, using syllabication strategies to decode new words, and to isolate sounds of words. \r\n\r\nHaving whiteboards, markers, and erasers to utilize to do this work has helped greatly! The kids love using them and it's an easy way for me to do quick corrects, help support them, and for them to show what they know. \r\n\r\nAlso, my students are feeling successful using these materials to practice their new knowledge. I can't tell you how exciting it is when students say, \"I know this is spelled wrong, so maybe I should try another vowel team in that word.\" They're using their new strategies, working hard, and making huge progress!","fullyFundedDate":1742929611702,"projectUrl":"project/intervention-facelift/9193241/","projectTitle":"Intervention Facelift","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Claire","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp7257310_orig.jpg?crop=396,396,x147,y25&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1591103375042","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/7257310"},{"teacherId":8895741,"projectId":9268034,"letterContent":"Building reading skills is a major focus in first grade. It can be difficult to find text that can be decoded, especially at the beginning of the year. The resources that I was able to acquire follow a scope and sequence that supports how students learn to read. We start with basic CVC (consonant, vowel, consonant) words, then begin to add new letter patterns (digraphs- sh, th, ch; blends; long vowels). Students build confidence because they feel successful. \r\n\r\nReading takes place in multiple formats within our classroom. Students read in not only whole group, but also small groups and partners. As their skills progress, they move into reading independently. These resources allow for differentiation that can focus on each individual's skill level. All of the books look similar, so it is not obvious who is reading lower level books or what skill they are focusing on. \r\n\r\nThese resources have made students excited to read. They want to show what they can read and are now asking for more time for reading. Students are also now organically discussing what they are reading. They are assuming more independence and responsibility in their own learning.","fullyFundedDate":1746579026074,"projectUrl":"project/building-readers-one-book-at-a-time/9268034/","projectTitle":"Building Readers One Book At A Time","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Claflin","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8895741"},{"teacherId":6981695,"projectId":8906409,"letterContent":"As you may already know, the United States is currently in a reading crisis. Here at Lake Superior School District our teachers are engaging in amazing professional development in order to ensure all children are able to read. Through this rigorous professional development, we are finding new strategies to help our earliest readers orthographically map words into their young brains. Orthographic mapping is the process of learning to read and spell words by connecting sounds to letters. It's a key part of becoming a fluent reader. \r\nTools like magnetic letter tiles and word work boards make this process explicit and visible for students. Your donation to our \"Construction Zone! Working With Words\" project enabled our first grade teachers to implement the use of magnetic tiles with every student in all 3 classes at one of our elementary schools. These word work tiles and mats are used daily in a whole group setting to practice previously learned concepts and to introduce new concepts. They are also utilized in small group instruction to meet the individual needs of all learners.\r\nThe students are so excited to learn and much more engaged using their own boards to manipulate the letter tiles. It has enhanced their ability to segment and blend words together to truly understand the phonetic process.
