I have used them in small groups from fifth grade to first grade. All of the students loved exploring how the different colored cards made the indi cars move. \r\n\r\nThe first couple of times students worked with the cars, I allowed them to create their own paths for the cars to follow. This allowed students to better acquaint themselves with how the cards worked and how precise they had to be with the cars. We then tested how far cards could be from one another before the cars stopped. \r\n\r\nAfter exploring, students were given challenge cards where they had to create a specific circuit for the cars to run. These challenges were fairly easy for my fifth graders, and a little hard for my first graders. However, the challenge cards were perfect for having my second and third grade students think, create and test their paths. My first graders were able to do some of the challenges as a group. I look forward to creating my own \"Challenge Cards\" with specific math and reading standards. Right now, we are working hard on decoding words and applying the phonics patterns we are learning in class. Until receiving these resources, my students had very few opportunities to hold and read grade-level appropriate books independently. Much of our fluency practice had to be done with texts I printed on paper. These new books have completely changed that experience. I have created individual book bins labeled with each student's name, and students can independently choose books that match the phonics patterns and skills they are currently practicing. They are able to read, reread, and build fluency with books that are just right for where they are as readers.\r\n\r\nThe students were so excited to see the new books and immediately wanted to look through them and start reading. For many of them, simply having a collection of books that they can call \"their\" books has made reading feel more personal and exciting. I love watching students independently select a book, find a quiet place to read, and use the phonics skills we have been practicing to work through words they may not have been able to read before. Those moments are building much more than reading skills—they are building confidence, independence, and a genuine sense of themselves as readers.\r\n\r\nOur next step is to continue strengthening decoding and fluency while gradually increasing the complexity of the words and texts students can read independently. As the year progresses, students will continue using these books to practice the phonics patterns they have learned, reread familiar texts to improve accuracy and expression, and work toward the goal of becoming fluent readers by the end of first grade. After being a teacher for 18 years, but stepping into the role of the PE teacher, this project was necessary for our school. I could have never imagined, though, getting a large project fully funded would happen the first time I used Donors Choose. I am so appreciate and thankful and have recommended it to so many other teachers. \r\n This large project was full of gym mats, different kinds of balls, pillow polo sticks, bounce boards, and more. Because of this project I was able to do a hockey unit with my students. The equipment was also used to make Olympic stations that brought so much joy to my students. The possibilities are now endless to my lessons and I have an extra pep in my step knowing I have the things I need to be a successful teacher. \r\n When I first told students about the project, it seemed difficult to imagine what nearly $4000 of PE equipment would look like. But, each time I got out new cones or balls, you could see their excitement. They know people cared about them to give them these things and in return they are doing a nice job taking care of all the new equipment. \r\n One project I still have on my mind is to create a project to get scooters for the gym. They are used for so many different activities. We have some that are very dated and their size is inappropriate for all body types. While there is no prize at the end of the game, they all try to do their best to gain the most points.
