They enjoyed reading Ivan's diary as he lived in a small enclosure in a shopping mall, with only his neighboring elephant friend Stella and a dog named Bob to keep him company. When Ivan helped the new elephant, Ruby, find a home in a zoo using his artistic talents, students were thrilled when Ivan found his home there too.\r\n\r\nThis novel had students engaged from the very beginning! They laughed along with Ivan's humor and his unique way of understanding the world, but they also learned the importance of animals living in safe environments and the need to protect endangered species. Students were amazed to discover that Ivan was a real silverback who lived in a mall for 27 years before finding his home at the Atlanta Zoo. We read a wonderful article the zoo posted, complete with pictures of Ivan, and watched a video showing him while he was still in his mall enclosure.\r\n\r\nAfter reading the novel, students were eager to research an animal of their choice. They created colorful poster displays that informed others about their animal and its risk of becoming endangered or extinct. My students walked away from this meaningful project with a deeper knowledge and understanding of how to care for our planet and its creatures.","fullyFundedDate":1759580690638,"projectUrl":"project/a-love-for-reading/9493498/","projectTitle":"A Love for Reading","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Parsons","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp10090341_orig.jpg?crop=1:1,smart&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1759778621311","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10090341"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_19108","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":524,"numTeachers":37,"percentFrplEligible":48,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":0,"percentWhite":92,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":2,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"5 - 6","studentTeacherRatio":"14.2:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":false,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"TOWN","ncesMetroType":"TOWN_FRINGE"},"inStateSupporters":93.1,"schoolId":19108,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Bell Intermediate Academy on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Bell Intermediate Academy","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/indiana/metropolitan-sd-martinsville/martinsville-east-middle-school/19108"}
