It is a very abstract concept that there is the rhythm that you play, and then there is a specific tone you are pulling out of the drum. \r\n\r\nMaking this connection to tone quality with percussionists is further hampered when the drums they are playing on are worn out and sound dull. High-quality drum heads, sticks, mallets, beaters, and other accessories are important to create better tone, and they need to be replaced regularly. With these supplies, we have had a renaissance (no pun intended) of snare drum tone quality improvement, and that has motivated our students to reach a whole new level of success in music. I've tried my share of instructional books, and they tend to have a lot of flaws in pacing, strategy, and occasionally downright incorrect instruction. \r\n\r\nAACPS adopted the Habits of a Beginner Band Musician book as the one and only textbook used for elementary school band programs for a reason- it is the best comprehensive band method out there right now. It is not just useful for elementary school, however- it is designed to be a 1.5-year method book for programs that meet every day. With our A/B schedule, it works perfectly well as a 3-year method. Like the previous project, having instruments in working order is critical for a band program to succeed. Woodwind corks need to be greased so the instruments are not damaged during assembly. We were able to procure a high-quality synthetic grease that lasts a long time for students and protects corks well.\r\n\r\nWe were also able to mitigate our mouthpiece needs. We are now able to issue a mouthpiece and pouch to each individual tuba and euphonium student, preventing unsanitary equipment sharing.
