My students were excited to see the new thermometers arrive, and they immediately wanted to start using them. In Biology, students have been using the digital oral thermometers to collect body-temperature data and explore how the human body responds to changes in activity and environment. Instead of just reading that the body maintains a stable internal temperature, students can measure, compare, and analyze real data from their own bodies.\r\n\r\nThe infrared thermometers have also opened up new opportunities in Earth Science. Students are using them to investigate how different surfaces heat up and cool down, making connections between their observations and the way Earth's surface interacts with sunlight. We incorporated brain science (why adolescents make poor decisions), how growing up with constant violence may reshape the human brain, cultural expectations, and mental health. The addition of a contemporary text to contrast one of my favorite Shakespeare plays gave much more weight and depth to our conversations about the characters as people rather than words on a page.\r\n\r\nI am looking forward to diving even deeper into the structures of the texts next year since they are both written in a form of verse; I'll use this to lead into our final Poetry unit and ultimate Poetry Project, which is a shared unit across the entire senior English classes.
