For many of my students, empathy is not something that comes naturally. As pre-teens, they are already hard-wired to think of their own wants, needs, and feelings, but to then put themselves in someone else's shoes and approach life from that perspective does take conscious effort. \r\nTo start, I had students write about their own feelings anonymously in a Google doc and then printed these out, read them to the class, and we talked about how it would feel to have those feelings. To heart and understand that someone in the class was feeling lonely, or sad, or angry was eye-opening. We used other activities to help students see that the feelings they felt were also felt by other students. We took a lot of time to write in our journals and record not only our thoughts and feelings, but also how we thought others were feeling. The daily prompts, such as \"describe a room in your home using the five senses.\" were helpful in giving students who were unaccustomed to free expression a launching point. With prompting from peer reviews (and me) they expanded beyond commonly used words and descriptors and very general writing to go deeper and more thoughtful. \r\n\r\nWithout the support of donors and Donors Choose, we would not have been able to do this project in this way.
