It is a focal point of the room and everyone noticed immediately. The joy and excitement that it brought because they know that the carpet time is a special time where we gather as a classroom community. We spend so much time together on the carpet engaging in social emotional learning, reading together, dancing, creating, sharing, and promoting success for one another. Now that the space is visually appealing and every student's spot is designated with a smiley face, each student knows that each spot is reserved to be their personal learning space. Being able to share the value of your kindness has given me the opportunity to demonstrate to the first graders the meaning of generosity and kindness. We learned first hand how it feels when someone extends a piece of kindness to help make other people's lives better. We discussed ways in which they can now emulate those same gestures toward others. This has been such an amazing gift that came with so many life lessons. The best part is how many students this will help as we will use it from year to year. I'll be able to share with each upcoming class where it came from and how someone in this world values them and their education. People care about them. You didn't just tell these children that they are important, but you showed them.
