These books have become an important part of The Reading Project, my effort to encourage every student to read one real, physical book each trimester that connects to U.S. history through either historical fiction or nonfiction. Our new collection includes outstanding, award-winning graphic novels that bring history to life in a way that is engaging, memorable, and accessible. I cannot thank you enough for helping us build a classroom library that truly excites students about reading.\r\n\r\nOne of the most powerful examples of the impact of these books came from a student who read They Called Us Enemy, a graphic novel about actor George Takei's childhood experiences in Japanese American incarceration camps during World War II. After reading the book, this student became fascinated by the history he had discovered and wanted to learn more. His curiosity grew into a passion project when he chose Japanese American internment during World War II as his National History Day research topic. Seeing a student move from reading a book for class to independently investigating a complex historical topic is exactly why access to meaningful literature matters. That is the power of a great book—it can open a door to curiosity, empathy, and a lifelong desire to learn.\r\n\r\nThe students' reactions were priceless when they saw all of the new books arrive. Many immediately recognized titles they had been hoping to read, while others were drawn in by the amazing artwork and quickly found stories that matched their interests. Graphic novels have become an especially powerful gateway for many of my reluctant readers and for students who are still working toward grade-level reading proficiency. These books help students build confidence while exploring important moments in American history, and they often lead students to pick up additional history books once they discover that reading can be both enjoyable and meaningful. Watching students recommend books to one another, discuss historical events, and eagerly ask what they can read next has been one of the greatest rewards of this project.\r\n\r\nI also want to offer my sincere apologies for taking so long to send this message of thanks. My family has experienced several significant changes over the past year and a half, and I have been slowly working to catch up on many things that deserved my attention much sooner. The students were thrilled when they saw all of the new choices! We used these supplies to decorate privacy screens for ELPAC testing, with inspirational quotes and words of encouragement for the test takers. \r\n\r\nAs a teacher of 8th grade students, it is my job to do my best to help my MLL students redesignate before they go off to high school. We spent a significant amount of time during ELD preparing for the test, which would be difficult even for English-only to pass. \r\n\r\nDespite all our preparation, tests are a \"no fun\"/high anxiety activity. Having these testing screens, with words of encouragement from students' families and friends helped to alleviate some of that test anxiety, and help them to perform their best on the test. \r\n\r\nAs an educator, it is important to pay attention to all marginalized groups in a classroom. I am now up to a set of 8 wiggle stools. Wiggle stools allow subtle movement like rocking, swiveling, or wobbling without the student needing to leave their seat or disrupt class. 8th grade is a critical time to get students up to grade level in reading and writing, before they go off to high school. Wiggle stools are beneficial for middle school students when it comes to focus & energy management.\r\n\r\nThe impact of this set of stools has been an improvement in student focus, student relationships, and student self advocacy. \r\n\r\nMiddle school students often lean in their chairs at their desk, in order to incorporate movement and self-regulate during a 75 minute class. This is problematic because it's unsafe and because it breaks the chairs over time. It was a near constant battle with students to get them to stop leaning in their chairs-\"Stop leaning in your chair!\". Now I can just redirect and give them another option- \"If you need to lean, grab a stool.\" This has made ongoing interactions with the students, on the whole, more positive. \r\n\r\nAdditionally, it has given the students the opportunity to reflect on their own learning needs and styles. Students have the option to grab a stool and switch it with their traditional chair. In a class period I have an average of 2-3 students do this. It is both the students who struggle with sitting still (students with ADHD or other learning differences), and students who struggle with staying awake.
