The GoPro has given my students the ability to observe, document, and reflect in ways that simply wouldn't have been possible before.\r\nRecently, we used the GoPro to document the full life cycle of our caterpillars as they transformed into butterflies. Instead of just reading about metamorphosis, students became real scientists. We captured close-up footage of the caterpillars growing, forming chrysalises, and eventually, they will be emerging as butterflies. Being able to replay these moments allows students to notice details they may have missed in real time — subtle movements, changes in color, and the exact moment of transformation. It sparked deeper discussions, richer science journals, and genuine curiosity. They weren't just learning about life cycles — they were witnessing and documenting one.\r\nWe also brought the GoPro on a special field trip to the aquarium. The camera allowed us to record marine life up close, even in dim lighting where students might not have been able to see clearly. Back in the classroom, we reviewed the footage together, paused to ask questions, and connected what we observed to our science standards. Students were able to analyze fish movements, habitats, and behaviors in a way that extended the learning long after the field trip ended.\r\nWhat excites students most is the ability to capture real-world experiences and revisit them. They feel like filmmakers, scientists, and researchers. The GoPro gives them ownership — they plan what to record, ask questions while filming, and eagerly wait to review the footage together.\r\nI've especially seen students who are typically quiet become deeply engaged during these projects. One student who rarely participates in whole-group discussions eagerly took charge to capture our butterfly footage, explaining each stage with confidence. Another student took pride in being our \"field trip documentarian,\" carefully recording aquarium exhibits and later helping lead our class discussion using the video clips.\r\nYour generosity has done more than provide a piece of technology — it has given my students the ability to slow down, observe closely, think critically, and relive powerful learning moments. You've helped turn everyday lessons into unforgettable experiences.\r\nWith gratitude,\r\nJacqueline","fullyFundedDate":1764164914116,"projectUrl":"project/capturing-student-perspectives-gopro-fo/9726173/","projectTitle":"Capturing Student Perspectives: GoPro for Active Learning, Reflection, & Social-Emotional Growth","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Jackie","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-1_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10268781"},{"teacherId":1517930,"projectId":9713869,"letterContent":"Thank you so much for your generous donations. The PE equipment has allowed my students to consistently participate in a diverse number of activities during PE lessons. I provide my students with at least 20 minutes of organized structured play. The equipment has also allowed me to be creative with introducing new activities using multiple equipment. For instance, I incorporated using hula hoops to extend the basketball hoop target for first grade students learning how to play basketball. In addition, my students enjoyed learning to how to play volleyball. To avoid any possible injuries, I introduced the activity by using balloons before using the actual volleyballs we received. \r\n\r\nThe students were ecstatic receiving all the sports equipment. Fortunately, the equipment arrived on separate dates so it allowed the students to unbox and appreciate each sports tool. They couldn't stop talking about all the activities they can possibly do during our PE lessons. Each student has their favorite activity they look forward to participate in during PE. I'm hopeful that the variety of activities will encourage my students to continue being active outside of school. \r\n\r\nThank you so much. When I started this school year I wanted to emphasize the importance of integrating the ceramic arts into our learning, as a way to help students explore an art form they might not otherwise have access to. Since our classroom does not have access to a kiln, we have used air dry clay and the tools provided with this grant to practice some basic skills that will be transferred to kiln-fired clay pieces later in the year. \r\n\r\nWe started with observation and sketching of the tools, as well as using them to create small pieces using air dry clay. We also used our brushes to paint bisque fired ceramics pieces using the Mimbres Pottery techniques that we learned about in class. Students are getting more and more familiar with these tools, which will make it much easier to take on larger projects in the spring semester. \r\n\r\nWe have also been using our new seating in a variety of ways: small group instruction, partner/group work, reading buddies, STEAM stations and flex seating for students who need additional space and support. These are coveted spots in the classroom, but students have been doing a great job of treating them with respect and sharing the seats equitably as a class of 27. \r\n\r\nOur classroom is a space for learning, growing and expressing our strengths through many different forms.
