In honor of Womens History month, I used the gift card to purchase a set of reading comprehension passages that celebrate women in history. I dispay the pasage on my smart-board, and the class echo-reads the passage all together, then I call on a couple of studetns to read the passage aloud. The students have been captivated by the stories of amazing women, such as: Oprah Winfrey, and Marie Curie. They became so intensely interested, that they asked to learn more. The passages also include room for a written response from the students. These are great because it gives the students an opportunity to practice their handwriting, and spelling skills. There is still plenty of money left on the gift card, and I will use it to purchase even more quality writing worksheets. We use it every day as a gathering space for morning meetings, read-alouds, phonics lessons, and group discussions. One special moment was during a recent shared reading activity, when students gathered on the rug to listen to a story about Martin Luther King Jr. We worked together on becoming aware of different shades of skin color and conducting an experiment with a white and brown egg and cracking them open to see that they are the same on the inside! It was a special teachable moment of acceptance and love.\r\n\r\n The rug provides a comfortable, defined space where students can sit safely, focus, and feel part of a learning community. It has also supported collaborative activities, such as partner turn-and-talks and whole-group counting games, helping students build both academic and social skills.\r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the new rug, their faces lit up with excitement. They were eager to sit on it right away and immediately noticed how colorful, soft, and inviting it was. Many students commented on how it made our classroom feel \"new\" and \"special.\" It created a sense of pride and ownership in our learning environment. The rug has helped students stay more engaged during lessons, and they are more motivated to participate when they are gathered together in this welcoming space.\r\n\r\nAs we continue our learning, the rug will play an important role in upcoming literacy and math activities. Students will use the space for small-group phonics instruction, interactive read-alouds, and hands-on math lessons focused on counting, number recognition, and problem-solving. We are also beginning thematic units where students will listen to stories, discuss ideas, and collaborate on group projects while seated together. This rug is helping us build a strong classroom community where students feel comfortable, focused, and ready to learn. While reading What If Everybody Did That?, we discussed how breaking rules can affect our classroom community and why it's important to follow school and classroom expectations. During our read-aloud of Juice Box Bully, we talked about bullying and how students can stand up for one another and help when they see someone being treated unkindly. These books opened the door to meaningful conversations and helped students reflect on their actions.\r\n\r\nStudents used the Unifix cubes to understand place value and multiplication. They were able to see how ten ones make one ten, which helped them visualize how many hundreds, tens, and ones are in a number. The cubes made abstract concepts more concrete and supported their overall understanding of math. Students also used the Unifix cubes for multiplication to create equal groups and arrays, allowing them to visually see and count the total. This hands-on practice made multiplication more understandable and engaging.\r\n\r\nWe practice math every day using the individual whiteboards to check for understanding. Students use the dry-erase markers and erasers to show their math work, and they truly enjoy this daily routine. The whiteboards have also been especially helpful when learning multiplication and division, allowing students to draw equal groups and arrays to better understand the concepts.
