I had some books in my classroom for students, and, as being a newer teacher, was looking for something that was more appropriate for lower levels of German. I love to use authentic materials, and as part of our state standards, this is an important goal, but I have also realized that students need support and confidence before they are able to read authentic materials. I incorporated smaller articles and paragraphs from authentic resources, but know my students are not yet ready to read full books in German. As such, this book has helped support them on the way to this goal, as it is written for language learners. \r\n\r\nI introduced this book as a summary to their first year in German. I knew that in teaching courses, we have been taught that a person needs to understand 90-95% of the words on a page in order to understand the book. I conducted the same survey with my students, to see how much of the words and content they understood. They reported back that they understood about 90% of the words on each page, and thus, the content! It was great to see their confidence grow, as they realized, yes, I can read in German! I am super excited to watch these students progress in the language, and would love to purchase more books like this for upper levels. \r\n\r\nFurthermore, this book allows me to provide students who are really \"getting it\" the chance to do something else with their knowledge, if I have to go back and have a mini-lesson for students who need more help with a concept. I could have them read the book and answer the questions, to put their understanding to good use. \r\n\r\nI am beyond thrilled that you have chosen to recognize my German classroom, at times when support for our teachers and our language programs in particular is not always there. Thank you so much. The students REALLY appreciated it!\r\n\r\nMoreover, one of my students, when they found out that you funded the project, said that they knew you as you helped build their house. They were very impressed!","fullyFundedDate":1738180394504,"projectUrl":"project/german-students-develop-language-profici/9070023/","projectTitle":"German Students Develop Language Proficiency by Reading in Level 1","teacherDisplayName":"Mrs. Mancheski","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://storage.donorschoose.net/dc_prod/images/teacher/profile/orig/tp9901715_orig.jpg?crop=2316,2316,x0,y717&width=272&height=272&fit=bounds&auto=webp&t=1763938069021","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/9901715"},{"teacherId":8184349,"projectId":8585133,"letterContent":"I want to take this opportunity to express my gratitude for your generosity. Often times in education it is the simplest things that make the biggest difference in a student's day. When a student has their papers and handouts organized for each class, a reliable writing utensil or two, and a quick snack, they often feel confident enough to tackle the next class. These are things that I take pride in helping students with because students take pride in themselves and their work when we give them the right tools. Because of your donations, we get a class period or a school term or a new week started off on the right foot for many students. Ideally, students will continue to be productive and engaged learners!
