They were especially excited to see we had the newest graphic novels of Dog Man, FGTeev, Space Boy, and Wings of Fire. It was so fun watching them read and engage in these books with their classmates. They were laughing at hilarious parts and sharing funny parts of the books with their classmates. They have been reading with their friends, requesting to read during recess more and more, and even asking for suggestions on what they should read next. Our kids have been very excited and motivated to read books about people who navigate the world differently than them. Some students have also been able to relate in amazing ways to the characters in the story. Just this morning one of our kindergarten students saw the series Emma Every Day. This particular student wears hearing aids and the character in the book Emma Everyday wears a cochlear implant. The kindergartener said with a lot of enthusiasm, \"She has earrings just like me!\" She refers to her hearing aids as her earrings. She was so excited about the series and asked if she could read the books every day. Many of the other kids have a newly found interest on how kids in our school use different assistive technology devices to communicate and it has really helped them develop understanding and compassion for people who have disabilities. These books will be well loved for years and have already brought so much joy to our class. As students walk in they see books looking back at them, and often know what book they want before it's time to checkout. For the younger grades, having a carpet with defined spaces makes them feel like they belong and have a place all there own. The change is an ongoing process, but with the changes that have already been implemented I have seen students have independence during checkout.\r\n\r\nHaving forward facing bins for our most popular books makes it easier for students to find what they are looking for. Having rotating bins allows for exploration of 'new' (forgotten favorite) books. Some favorite books that had not been checked out in a long time were placed forward facing in a bin, and they started to fly off the shelves. Small or odd shaped books often get lost on the shelves, but the bins have helped them become visible and easy to find.\r\n\r\nMy favorite part of this process has been the smiles on my students faces every time they see something new or changed.
