It takes a lot of vulnerability for students to learn, especially those with low socioeconomic status that are more likely to fall behind peers from more affluent backgrounds and that are more likely to struggle to acquire early literacy skills. Minimizing their discomfort as much as possible helps ease a lot of the anxiety and unpleasant feelings that they may associate with learning to read.\r\n\r\nSince introducing my students to their new library and small group areas, they have shown a remarkable increase in wanting to get time in our classroom library. Over 25% of my incoming first graders have scored well below grade level on their beginning-of-the-year assessments, and it is not uncommon for students that struggle to read to exhibit challenging behavior when asked to spend time reading. This year, however, students of all achievement levels have been jumping at the opportunity to cuddle up with a good book in our reading area. Off-task behaviors have also decreased significantly, as students do not want to risk being asked to leave the comfort of the classroom library. Making reading attractive to students is so much easier when they see it as a reward rather than an obstacle.\r\n\r\nMoving forward, our library will continue to change and grow with new books being added as they acquire new reading skills and the theme of the library changing with the seasons. There is no way to capture in just a short letter the joy and amazement on the students' faces when the tools available to the STEM club were first unveiled. The immediate positive responses from students whose teachers have been searching for ways to increase their participation in STEM activities was overwhelming, and we are seeing some students that had never previously connected positively to opportunities at school emerge from their shell and dive into the lessons we had. \r\n\r\nThe pictures attached to this project capture only a fraction of the gratitude and excitement felt in the room as the students wrapped up their team-building lessons and got to work together to fly their drones for the first time.
