The children were excited to see their new materials and eager to get started. They use the playdough to roll, pinch, and shape lines and letters. Then they practice drawing those same shapes in their notebooks. The triangle pencils help them work on a comfortable pencil grip as they draw.\r\n\r\nOne of my favorite moments is watching a child proudly show me a line they made with playdough and then try it on paper. These small steps are building the hand strength and confidence they need for writing. Next, we'll continue practicing different lines and shapes before putting them together to draw pictures and form letters. Before, the classroom could become very hot and uncomfortable, making it difficult for young students to stay focused, regulated, and ready to learn.\r\n\r\nWith a cooler and more comfortable classroom, students are better able to concentrate during lessons, participate in activities, and remain engaged throughout the day. I have also noticed that students are less distracted by the heat and are able to transition more smoothly between activities.\r\n\r\nIn kindergarten, students are working hard to learn classroom routines, build stamina, develop communication skills, and begin important academic foundations. They have found the use of the keyboard helpful when fixing run-on sentences as well as expanding sentences using conjunctions. The iPad has been used daily and is a wonderful tool for students to observe models of work samples and follow along more closely with instruction. This has been great for all of my students as well as specifically helpful to my students that are just beginning to learn the English language and students that are struggling with a particular concept or skill. \r\n\r\nEach day, our class uses the iPad to view a sentence that is incomplete, a run-on or even a sentence that just needs more details. We then, use the writing tools to edit, and correct or add to the sentence to make it more robust. We also use the iPad to help follow step by step instructions to solve math equations. This has been a game changer! I am able to walk around the room while holding the iPad and modeling the math problem.
