Students are now using the new art supplies daily as we explore a different artist each month. Recently, students created Christmas gifts with the tiles that were provided. \r\n\r\nWhen the students first saw the materials, their excitement was immediate and contagious. They couldn't wait to explore the water color pencils, colored paper, and many students shared how \"real\" they felt as artists. The organized storage bins also helped students feel a sense of responsibility and ownership as they learned how to independently gather, use, and care for the materials together. They were also excited to see their prideful artwork dry on a rack rather than on the floors. \r\n\r\nThanks to your support, our next steps include continuing our monthly artist studies with deeper connections to technique, emotion, and self-expression. Students will compare artists' styles, reflect on how art communicates feelings, and collaborate on shared projects inspired by what they've learned. For my students with special needs, traditional math instruction can feel like a series of tall walls they can't climb. By bringing the \"Building Thinking Classrooms\" model into our classroom, we are tearing those walls down and replacing them with vertical whiteboards. When my students stand up to work, their engagement skyrockets. We use strategies like \"Numberless Word Problems\" and \"Three Reads\" to take the pressure off. Instead of rushing to grab numbers and guess an operation, they stand together at their boards, discussing the \"story\" of the math and drawing out their ideas. Then they create the equation and solve. This shift from sitting alone at a desk to standing together at a board has turned math from a source of frustration into a collaborative adventure.\r\n\r\nThe impact of Cognitively Guided Instruction (CGI) on these vertical surfaces is nothing short of magic. In our class, there isn't just one \"right way\" to solve a problem; we celebrate the unique ways my students' minds work. Because whiteboards are non-permanent, the fear of making a mistake disappears—they can just swipe a marker and try again. This \"rough draft\" thinking is vital for students who struggle with executive functioning or math anxiety. These boards allow them to map out multi-step word problems in a way that is visual, social, and accessible. Your support provided the physical tools—the boards, erasers, and markers—that allow my students to see themselves as the capable, confident mathematicians I know they are. I want more (so I will keep my eye out for another Donors Choose so that I can have more then the 2 for my 12 students.","fullyFundedDate":1759374113248,"projectUrl":"project/being-a-standup-learner/9773969/","projectTitle":"Being a Standup Learner","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Cowell","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-10_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/8820878"},{"teacherId":8358175,"projectId":9772290,"letterContent":"We are absolutely thrilled and deeply grateful for the generous donations you contributed to our second-grade classrooms this year! Furthermore, the essential classroom items you provided, whether they were books, learning games, or organizational tools, ensured that our classroom environment was well-equipped and conducive to learning. We primarily use the whiteboards during our math lessons to promote visual learning and shared problem-solving. For example, during a recent collaborative activity on numbers, students were able to spontaneously break into small groups and use the whiteboards to show their thinking using models. This moment perfectly highlighted how the whiteboards foster student accountability and deep engagement. The floor chairs, used multiple times a day, promote a relaxed yet focused environment, allowing students to choose the seating arrangement that best helps them concentrate during note taking, independent work and group planning sessions.\r\n\r\nThey were very excited to see both the whiteboards and the new floor chair, especially since one of our existing chairs was broken and needed replacement.
