These new books help students strengthen key skills such as identifying theme, analyzing characters' motivations, summarizing chapters, and citing evidence to support their thinking. Students also practice making inferences, comparing texts, and engaging in thoughtful discussions that build both comprehension and critical thinking.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom is active and collaborative. You might see students participating in small-group novel discussions, annotating passages, or pausing during a read-aloud to debate a character's choices. Independent reading time allows students to choose books that match their interests while still challenging their skills. Some of my more reluctant readers are gaining confidence as they discover stories that truly capture their attention, while avid readers are pushing themselves to think more deeply and share insightful perspectives. In social studies, we tied art directly into our unit on the ahupuaʻa, where students illustrated the different land divisions from the mountains to the sea, helping them visualize how resources were shared and used in ancient Hawaiʻi. These hands-on projects made learning more meaningful and helped students make strong connections between art and content.\r\n\r\nWhen the materials first arrived, my students were beyond excited.
