We explained that they could keep using them in school as they transition to ninth grade, or leave them to accumulate personal thoughts and notes. The art carts take the impetus off of my shoulders for having to answer the door and interrupt my teaching or giveaway supplies that I have myself bought or gotten donated or used my department funds for.\r\n\r\nThe art carts were incredibly well received, and were already being used by each floor from when we put them out until the last day of school. I'm so glad that all teachers at my fine and performing arts. The art classroom in room 325 has always had extremely lovely posters and labels with pictures so students can find what they need. However, my white whale at Kelvyn Park has always been the storage closet. I've wanted to extend the student ability to access a period of different supplies without me. I've also wanted to create an incredible inventory that both me and my partner in crime Miss Bonilla can use in order to know what supplies we have and when we need to re-order.\r\n\r\nIt took me eight weeks, but I managed to clean our storage closet to organize each shelving unit by type of supply to use the bins that were donated to me to make sure that no bugs fall into our supplies - which I know is gross but is a reality of having your storage closet in a bathroom. \r\n\r\nNow our storage closet has beautifully laminated labels on clear bins and my life is forever changed at school because we will always know what we have and what we need without having to dig through piles of ancient trash and that's because of you. I had 30 or so books to display in my classroom, two small bookshelves, pens, pencils, markers and some posters, and a plant. My stress over not having all the essentials to make my classroom what I wanted it to become was calmed by a colleague reminding me that as long as all students had a place to sit and a pencil in their hand on the first day of school, that was all that truly mattered. While I believe that every classroom needs at least a little more than a desk, chair, and pencil for every student, it did help to reframe what materials are important for learning and to not get swept up in the dreamland videos of teachers decorating their classrooms top to bottom with every resource imaginable at their disposal. \r\n\r\nThis project came out of a genuine need for more books, specifically in Spanish, for my students. I quickly amassed a substantial classroom library from donations from friends, personal purchases, and from tiny libraries and garage sales on daily walks. However, finding books in Spanish out in the wild on such walks, in garage sales, and in donations was much rarer. This project was created to fill that gap in my classroom resources. I still have room for A LOT of growth for my Spanish library, but this project more than tripled my students' access to books in Spanish in my classroom. What might feel like a couple drops in a bucket may just water a garden exactly where it is needed! Because these texts are written at an accessible instructional level and include clear language and engaging visuals, students are able to better comprehend English texts independently and build confidence with reading in English.\r\n\r\nReading in our classroom includes a weekly independent reading routine that students truly look forward to. During this time, students choose a book from the donated classroom library and read independently while completing an Independent Reading Log. As they read, they actively track cognates, identify story structure and theme, record new vocabulary, and answer reflection questions. This helps them engage thoughtfully with the text and apply the skills they are learning. This routine has created a calm, focused learning environment where reading feels purposeful and accessible.\r\n\r\nWhen students finish an independent reading log and still have time left, they often grab another book to continue reading simply because they want to!
