In my classroom, student voice is at the center of the work that we do. Students are expected to share out their thinking, and in order for them to feel confident doing so on the "main stage," they need to have supports for every step of that problem-solving process. The most important resource for my students' learning is their math notebook; the notebook is where all of their thinking and problem-solving will be recorded. Students will work in their notebooks every day--from the do now questions, to the initial launch for the lesson, to their investigation work, to their exit tickets. This is where students will reflect on their own solutions and the solutions of their peers. That means that students will also be presenting their work to the whole group, which they will do on chalkboards or whiteboards. As many of my students are English Language Learners, it is important that there are numerous differentiated opportunities for students to practice this sharing of their work. These materials will also allow me to better address those unique needs of all of my students throughout this school year. Above all else, these materials will support a vibrant classroom community in which we discuss, debate, and discover more about the world around us through mathematics. Each and every young person in my classroom has something to contribute--it is my job as the teacher to facilitate those contributions in safe and creative ways. I'm looking forward to everything that I'll be learning from my students this year, and I'm immensely grateful for any support that I might receive in that endeavor!
