As a first-time preschool teacher, I cannot fully express how meaningful it has been to watch my students grow through this project. Your generosity has transformed our reading time into a hands-on, joyful, and calming learning experience for every child. The new books have helped us focus on two big areas: social-emotional learning (SEL) and early literacy skills. Through our SEL stories, students are learning how to identify their feelings, practice kindness, make good choices, and understand that it is okay to feel angry, sad, or excited—and how to handle those feelings in positive ways.\r\nOur nonfiction books introduce early science concepts like animal life cycles and habitats, while also building vocabulary and listening comprehension. The tactile letters and matching activities allow students to connect letters with sounds using touch and movement, which is especially helpful for preschool learners and students with special needs. Reading in our classroom is active and engaging! We gather together on the carpet for story time, where students listen, answer questions, point to pictures, and act out emotions from the stories. We also use the books in our calming corner, where children can choose a story and sit with a plush toy to relax and self-regulate.\r\nStudents explore books independently and in small groups, using markers, dot art, and bulletin board displays to respond to stories through art and discussion. Reading is no longer just sitting quietly—it is interactive, expressive, and meaningful. Yes! Several students who previously struggled with emotions or attention are especially drawn to the SEL books and plush toys. One student who often felt overwhelmed now chooses a feelings book and a plush toy when they need to calm down. Another student who is usually quiet has started naming emotions out loud and participating in group discussions.\r\nOur English language learners are also benefiting greatly from the picture-rich nonfiction books, which help them understand new words through visuals and repetition. Seeing their confidence grow has been incredibly rewarding.\r\n\r\nBecause of you, our classroom is a warmer, more peaceful, and more exciting place to learn. These books are helping children not only become kinder friends and more confident learners. Thank you for believing in our students and giving them tools that will impact them far beyond this school year.","fullyFundedDate":1764175523440,"projectUrl":"project/from-abcs-to-emotions-tools-to-grow-pre/9557292/","projectTitle":"From ABCs to Emotions: Tools to Grow Preschoolers Minds","teacherDisplayName":"Ms. Manzanero","teacherPhotoUrl":"https://cdn.donorschoose.net/images/placeholder-avatars/272/teacher-placeholder-8_272.png?auto=webp","teacherClassroomUrl":"classroom/10162135"}],"pageName":"schoolpage_27620","usesDonorsChoose":true,"infoPageType":"school","demographicsInfo":{"numStudents":508,"numTeachers":38,"percentFrplEligible":95,"percentAsian":0,"percentBlack":8,"percentWhite":4,"percentIndigenous":0,"percentLatinx":85,"showFreeAndReducedPriceLunchInfo":true,"showDemographicsInfo":true,"sourceTooltipString":"the National Center for Education Statistics","gradesServed":"Pre-K - 5","studentTeacherRatio":"13.4:1","demographicsDataSource":"MDR School","equityFocus":true,"titleOne":true,"metroType":"SUBURBAN","ncesMetroType":"SUBURB_LARGE"},"inStateSupporters":81.2,"schoolId":27620,"financialInfo":null,"twitterShareText":"Learn more about Karel Havlicek Elementary School on @DonorsChoose:","schoolName":"Karel Havlicek Elementary School","canonicalPageUrl":"schools/illinois/berwyn-north-school-district-98/karel-havlicek-elementary-school/27620"}
